Yes, you need to turn it off and let it cool down. Also, you may want to check inside (or get a tech to do it) to make sure all the fans are running correctly. Make sure the laptop is on a solid surface, such as a table so that it can breathe. I am not sure why they named them laptops because really you shouldnt place them in your lap, on a bed or any other clothing surface, they can overheat and catch fire that way.

I have had the same problems with downloading updates. I have tried everything. I blame Vista and don't think there is anything we can do about it until the bug is fixed....security pack 3 maybe...not released yet.

The burning smell you are experiencing could be hair, dust and debris that is stuck in the ventilation ducts and grills, power down the system, remove the battery. Get a few cans of compressed air from an office supply store. Now, take all the access doors off the base of the computer and using short bursts of air from the cans start blowing out the dirt and debris in the cavities and spaces on the computer. Make sure you pay very close attention to vents and fan grills, there could be a large amount of dust, hair etc. there stuck in the vents. If the smaell is more plastic in nature, shut the system and leave it down and seek professional tear down help.

Hi ahzeal,
One thing you can do that make some changes in automatic updates. Just follow is these steps:- 1.Goto Start---->Run. 2.Type services.msc then hit enter. 3.Find out the Automatic updates or windows updates(in case of Windows Vista or Windows 7). 4.Change it to manual or you can stop that(Depends on your wish).

The unit works as of right now...but there is a smell of something burning

Quite often, if you smell like a plastic burning smell, one of the capacitors is faulty, and should be checked immediately. Quite often the compressor start capacitor, will get hot and start to melt. Have it checked by qualified technician or electrician, as they are dangerous and can give a fatal shock if not experienced with handling them, even when power is shut off. $20-$30 part, and 1/2hr. labor should take care of it. The cover on roof unit, has to be removed to access the capacitors, so watch for bees, wasps, when you do so. Make sure power is off at breaker panel.

Have you installed the Lenovo EnergyCut drivers? Without it, laptop may not work properly and turns extra hot. Try letting it cool down before you try again.
