Question about Hoover U6311-930 Power Drive Bagged Upright Vacuum

Hoover Power Drive Supreme - Locked Up!!

Something got picked up and is now lodged in the turbine. It's now preventing it from turning. I've tried to figure out how to take it apart enough to get into the turbine but I can't find any way in. Is there a disassembly schematic or some kind of instructions online?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Q: Are you talking about the turbine powered hand tool that attaches to the hose? If so, just squeeze the two round pins on the sides, and the housings will separate.

How do we get at the drive belt? The cover seems to be sealed.

There is no belt in a Hoover SteamVac. The brushes are turned by an air driven turbine. If the brushes are not turning, it is usually because the turbine has seized up and may need replacement. Insert a screwdriver into the square hole that the pin on the brush assembly normally fits into and see if it turns. If it doesn't, you will need a new turbine.

Brushes on bottom of hoover rug cleaner not spinning

The most common reason for this is that the air driven turbine has failed. To test it, insert a screwdriver into the square hole that the brush pin normally fits into and see if it turns. If it does not turn, the turbine assembly will need to be replaced. To prevent failure in the future, always store the shampooer with the upper tank removed, and squeeze the trigger to thoroughly empty the soap solution from the machine.

yes if you strip down the caseing, you need to find out if it has swallowed something in the turbine or if the brush has failed on the rotor inside the caseing, but it should all be fixable

Hoover U6317-930 - Turbine Locked Up!

You will need to remove the hood as though changing the belt. Then best to detach the handle/ bag chamber with the black screw at the lower end in the center.
Lay the vac flat and you should see two clamps over the motor housing, one on either side. Undo the clamps and the motor will lift out. There will be four more screws holding the fan shroud onto the motor housing. Remove these and detach the fan end only. Installation is the reverse order. The fan itself will unscrew if replacing, just secure the motor shaft without damaging it.
Polish the motor shaft clean for a new belt, removing burned rubber. I use 600 grit wet/dry sandpaper or steel wool.
Any evidence of a damaged fan blade means a new fan is required.
While you're at it, unscrew the end caps on the brush roll and remove the hair and thread. Then reassemble so it spins freely when holding the end caps. Install a new genuine belt. It will be snug, use the brush to pull it into place.
When reassembling be sure to engage the carpet height control through the lid
If this helps please acknowledge. If not psot back with the next problem

You are on the right track! Place a screwdriver (flatbladed) into the white drive square and try to turn it. If it is locked up the drive assembly is your problem. It is very common for these parts to lock up because of the moisture involved with these machines. The only way to fix this is by replacing the drive unit, simply remove the hood of the machine and you will find 4 screws and one hose hold this drive in place.

If the gear assembly turns just fine you have a problem elsewhere. More than likely it has something to do with the dirty water tank. All the drives and pumps on these run off the suction created in the recovery tank. I would remove the tank take the lid off and then place it all back again. Then attempt to run the machine.

If the tank is on fine, the white gear turns ok and the brushes still will not turn:
Time to go back and inspect that brush block. The drive tab may be brolken off too short, or something else to do with that particular part.

In the case you can find nothing wrong with any of this, i would contact the local hoover warranty service center. A locator is on the hoover website. Hoover picks out the best vacuum dealers to service their product, for a small fee they would probably be able to tell you just what is wrong with it.

Best of Luck!

The brushes won't turn.

There are two reason why the "Turbine" will not rotate. A: It is an air driven device, so if there is not enough air flow through it, it will not rotate. I beleive there is a lint screen on the bottom of the unit that slides down and can be cleaned out. Make sure the recovery tank lid is on properly and there are no missing gaskets in the airflow path. B: The turbine is locked up. This happens a lot. You should be able to rotate the brushes on the block by hand will they are locked into the machine easily(this will manually rotate the turbine. If you can't then your turbine is locked up. What you do then is romove the hood. Screws hold it down in the front and it pops into place in the back. Take out the turbine. There are two screws on the top and two accessed from the bottom of the unit. There are a four screws and a few locks that hold the turbine together. Take it apart, but be careful as to how the gears and washers are arranged and not to lose any small parts. You can usually free it up by hand by rotating the fan on the opposite of the gear box. Once it is freed you can apply a lubricant to prevent it from happening again. I use spray lithium grease. There usually isn't enough lubricant applied in on the gears at the factory, so once you do this, you shouldn't have this problem again. When you first run the machine again it might blow a little excess grease out of the exhause, so to be safe don't fire it up on the carpet, when you first test it. The gearbox may need to be replaced if it is damaged and not just locked up, but this rarely happed. Also, try not to lean the machine all the way back(place the handle on a chair or something) over time it tends to tear the hose inside of it.

Good Luck

Brushes wont spin

Greetings from GoVacuum,

The Hoover SteamVac's are notorious for this exact problem. There are several things that can be causing this probelm.

First, what you'll need to do is take the brush block out of the machine. To do this there are 4 clips on the brush block. You will need to turn the machine upside down, and pull down on the brush block to where it won't pull out any farther. There are 4 clips, 2 on top, and 2 on the rear of the brushes. (See picture, I have circled one of the clips in red). Simply press these clips at the same time, and pull the brush block out of the machine. I'd say that 60% of the time that I see this problem, the main issue is that the brushes just need to be cleaned. If you have pets in the home, a lot of the time the pet hair will just be lodged inside the brushes, will prevent them from spinning. Use a pressurized water hose (garden hose with spray nozzle is ideal) and spray each brush with water to dislodge any pet hair. You should be able to get these brushes spinning when you spray them. Spray each brush until the brushes are spinning pretty fast. Re-insert the brushes into the machine, and test to see if the cleaning has fixed your problem. If the cleaning still fails to fix the problem, take the brushes back out of the machine.

One you have the brushes out of the machine, the first thing you should look at the brush stem that goes into the turbine inside the machine. This is the green pole pictured in middle of the brush block. Examine this pole to determine if the top of it has broken off. It should exactly how the picture shows it. Make sure that the plastic has not broken.

If the pole has broken, you will simply need to replace the brush block. If the pole is not damaged, the next thing to try is to turn the machine on while you have the brushes out. Look inside the machine, where the pole goes into the turbine (also important, make sure the switch for the brushes is turned to "Rotating Brush Speed Hi), this female receptacle should spin when the machine is turned on. It is important the try this when the foot pedal is released, and the handle down, and not in the upright position, as there is an internal switch that shuts the brushes off when the machine is in the upright position.

If you notice that the female receptacle where the brush pole is inserted is spinning, then your turbine is fine. If this part is not spinning, then most likely you will need to replace your turbine.

I hope this helps you with your problem. If not, please feel free to email me at chris.jones@govacuum.com, and I'd be happy to walk you through the diagnosing. I also can provide you with a blown up parts schematic to your machine, please just get the model number off the back of the machine and provide, and provide me with the full model number. I do carry all parts for your machine, and would be happy to provide any technical support you need.

I tried uploading the pictures to this solution, however Fixya will not allow the pictures because they are too big. Please email me, and I'll send you the pictures.

Hoover steamvacs don't use belts. If the brushes are not turning, pull the brush block out, turn the machine on and see if the square hole where the brush block was, is turning. If not then the turbine is bad. Sometimes you can take the turbine apart and clean it out. most times I have found , replace it.
