Question about Acer Aspire 5100 Notebook
I am a computer and electronics technologist looking for someone who really knows thier stuff. I have problem with my acer 5100 aspire laptop. Every ~13 seconds for ~13 my CPU usage jumps up really high, often to 100% and and brings everything to a hault. I can bearly watch a move and skype alone is impossible. No it isn't my video card. I have reformated and re-installed windows, rebuilt MBR and FAT etc. I have booted of a USB key running Linux (ubuntu) and used it's cpu plotting function. It reports one the the cores (dual) as running at 100% non stop. A bit different oddly enough but still a problem. I have concluded therefore the problem is not any software or OS related, or even anything to do with the HD. Next i re-installed drivers for sound and video processing to the latest. Going deeper I re-isntalled the CPU drivers and finally flashed in a fresh new BIOS. I believe that covers everything as far as software, firmware or any other little stray 0's and 1's. I have little cash so my question to you is: Is it the mother board that is broken or one of the CPU's? What should i order?
I can think of this:
If you are running Linux, do you have a SWAP partition active for Ubuntu? That and RAM, how much do you have?
If you are low on RAM or your SWAP partition is little, your CPUs will be running a lot.

You have something running in the background that is eating up the CPU useage. You need to identify which process is doing this.
Use the built in task manager, using ctrl-alt-delete to bring it up, and see which process is at above 90% cpu usage. Then post back here what you find.
