Question about Acer Aspire 5100 Notebook

1 Answer

100% of CPU used

I am a computer and electronics technologist looking for someone who really knows thier stuff. I have problem with my acer 5100 aspire laptop. Every ~13 seconds for ~13 my CPU usage jumps up really high, often to 100% and and brings everything to a hault. I can bearly watch a move and skype alone is impossible. No it isn't my video card. I have reformated and re-installed windows, rebuilt MBR and FAT etc. I have booted of a USB key running Linux (ubuntu) and used it's cpu plotting function. It reports one the the cores (dual) as running at 100% non stop. A bit different oddly enough but still a problem. I have concluded therefore the problem is not any software or OS related, or even anything to do with the HD. Next i re-installed drivers for sound and video processing to the latest. Going deeper I re-isntalled the CPU drivers and finally flashed in a fresh new BIOS. I believe that covers everything as far as software, firmware or any other little stray 0's and 1's. I have little cash so my question to you is: Is it the mother board that is broken or one of the CPU's? What should i order?

Re: 100% of CPU used

I can think of this:

If you are running Linux, do you have a SWAP partition active for Ubuntu? That and RAM, how much do you have?

If you are low on RAM or your SWAP partition is little, your CPUs will be running a lot.

The adapter doesn't seem to connect right. I was told it was inside the computer, but I'm not sure if the guy who was looking at it really knew what he was doing.

There are a few ways you can solve this, 1. Get someone to test the adapter in there laptop providing it is the same output and plug connection, 2. use a voltage meter on the charger unit or take it to a shop to be tested. If the DC socket on the laptop is broken then you can replace one for around £5 gbp

This will need to be soldered too just a few wires not too difficult if you have soldered before.
Good Luck

Acer 5100 noise from speakers and cpu runs 100%

Even though you bought the laptop used, you can try going to and leave a message they may be able to give you more advice.
I am thinking it could be the DVD drive or maybe even a memory issue, not really sure, maybe you need to add more memory, I think Acer will be able to help.
Good Luck.

Laptop Drive (D)

Feel free to place all the stuff you want on the D drive, if there are some acer files, may be better to leave them alone, but generally there should be noting important there. so go ahead, if you want to play it safe don't erase anything thats already there.

Power cuts off for acer aspire 5100

I,d suspect your problem will lie with, the systems CPU ( Processor ) or a component Overheating on the systems Motherboard. I would,nt suspect the Power Supply personally. unless your batterys not charging.

Acer Aspire 5100

To prevent the computer from freezing up, make sure you are running nothing else while you are trying to burn the disk. You can also change the programs that are starting up. Hit start, run, type msconfig, go to startup, uncheck everything, restart the computer. Then try to burn the disk. Also you can run CCleaner to repair some of your registry.

Problem with the acer aspire 5100 processor

Your CPU is underclocking to save power. You can use an application like SpeedSwitchXP to dynamically increase/decrease your CPU speed. You can download one form
Its pretty easy to use runs in the system tray. all you have to do is ask it to use max performance even when the system is running on battery. I am sure this will help.

Laptop computer lagging horribly

You have something running in the background that is eating up the CPU useage. You need to identify which process is doing this.

Use the built in task manager, using ctrl-alt-delete to bring it up, and see which process is at above 90% cpu usage. Then post back here what you find.
