This assumes that you have a basic Kenmore / Whirlpool top load, direct drive, neutral drain (it doesn't spin until the pump removes most of the water) machine.

First, see the Sears parts site for your washer:
http://www.searspartsdirect.com/partsdirect/index.action

Enter your model number and you'll see a list of major sub-components with diagrams and parts.

Following is the Whirlpool / Kenmore PDF on operation and maintenance of their top load, direct drive washers.

It has a good description of how the transmission works.

Following is the Whirlpool parts diagram for their commercial top load, direct drive washers including transmission parts and numbers. The parts for the consumer washers are basically the same.

We assume that something broke the coupler the first time.

I'd check to make sure that when you put the new coupler in, the six holes in the rubber piece lined up with the prongs in the plastic pieces.

If they did, the next thing to check is the transmission.

Following is a description of how to pull the transmission / gearcase.

http://www.american-appliance.com/catalog/newsdesk_info.php?newsPath=16&newsdesk_id=137

I found that instead of buying a special spanner wrench to remove the Tub Nut, a 10" pipe wrench opened fully and hooked to one of the prongs on the Tub Nut, giving it a quick tap with a hammer does well.

You really don't have to remove the drum and Tub Nut and drive block to remove the transission.

I'd pull the transmission and try turning the input shaft manually both ways, clockwise and counter-clockwise.

If it won't turn, it's likely that something in the transmission has broken and is jamming the main drive shaft.

There are a couple of plastic parts in the transmission. The Agitate Cams and the gear teeth on the main spin gear.

Pull the transmission, remove the clutch (there is a spring clip that holds the clutch on the main agitator shaft, remove the 8 screws carefully the transmission holds 16Oz of oil, remove the clip holding the main spin gear on and check the plastic agitator cams and the main spin gear.

The main spin gear is relatively expensive (Approx.$90 ) so if that is broken, you might want to consider a replacement transmission.

The Agitator Cams are only about $15,

The washing machine wont agitate?

There are many possibilities for this problem. you will have to check all of them one by one mentioned as follows :--- There is a lid switch in the washer. The washing machine will not start spinning till the lid is closed. In some cases it has been seen that lid is closed still the washer does not agitating. in this cases the lid switch has to be checked. if the lid switch is faulty then the closed lid will not be detected by the washing machine, and it will not start agitate cycle.
But if the lid switch is ok checked, then other possibility can be fault in the motor coupler. Many a times the motor coupler is broken .The motor coupler is plastic/rubber kind of material fitted on the shaft of the motor .Check properly if the motor coupler seems cracked, worn out loose or broken then it needs to be replaced to solve the issue. But if motor coupler is checked ok then other possibility for this problem is the spinning belt. If the belt is worn out or loose or cracked/broken then it needs to replace.
Only for GE washers. In GE model washers, there is a clutch used for proper spin speed. If the clutch wears out, it has to be replaced. But if clutch/belt seems ok. then other possibility is driver motor itself .check if the motor has power if not then the motor is got internally burnt .in this case the drive motor needs to be replaced. but if drive motor is functioning properly then other possibility to be checked for this fault is the transmission shifter and pulley. If the transmission shifter becomes defective, the unit may drain the water but not spin. Replacing the shifter is bit time consuming and tough job. you will require proper tools to deal with this problem.. But if the transmission shifter is properly working then other possibility to check is the Agitator itself. If the transmission is moving properly but the Agitator is getting stuck and not moving properly then its the fault in the agitator assembly that has to be replaced to solve the problem. This will help.Thanks.

The washing machine is properly draining but will not spin?

There are many possibilities for this problem, but the most common and regular problem seen is as follows:--
There is a lid switch in the washer. The washing machine will not start spinning till the lid is closed. In some cases it has been seen that lid is closed still the washer does not spin. in this cases the lid switch has to be checked. if the lid switch is faulty then the closed lid will not be detected by the washing machine, and it will not start spin cycle.

Only for GE washers. In GE model washers, there is a clutch used for proper spin speed. If the clutch wears out, it has to be replaced to. Replacing the shifter is bit time consuming and tough job. you will require proper tools to deal with this problem. But if the transmission shifter is properly working then other basic possibility to check is the spin bearing/basket drive. The part may be rusted ot got worn out completely. So the inner tub is not spinning freely inside the outer tub. If this is the case then you will hear a loud squiring/chirping sound during the spin cycle. So the bearing fault will be easily identified. Before replacing the spin bearing check if the bearings are got dried up or they are worn/rusted. If dried then apply bit greasy material on the bearings and check out. But if still the noise it needs replacement. But if the bearings are rusted/worn out then it needs replacement. That is confirmed.
This will help.Thanks.

Hello, Thats sounds like a broken motor coulpler, when its broke it will sound as if its agaitating/spinning yet it doesn't. The coupler is fairly easy to replace and this video will show you to replace it. The part number fot the coupler is 285753A it could be picked up from your local appliance parts store for no more that $20.00 or you could order it online from; assuredparts.com apdepot.com appliancepartspros.com searspartsdirect.com repairclinic.com Gene

Won' spin out and makes a loud noise like a grinding sound

The motor coupler may be broken. Many Whirlpool®-manufactured washers use a small, relatively inexpensive motor coupling. It's plastic and rubber and is mounted to the shaft of the motor on one side, and to the transmission on the other. Over time, the coupler wears out and fails. You may need to replace it.

I have a Kenmore top loading large capacity washer model 1028882791. It began washing as usual then began to making a loud humming sound. The agitation stopped. It only makes a loud humming sound. I...

The humming sound is coming from the drive motor running but unable to drive the agitator nor the basket to spin. The drive motor is definitely running as the drain function works because of the fact that drain pump is directly coupled with the rear spline of the motor. The drain pump works in either direction as long as the motor runs. The problem is obviously a broken motor coupler which transfers the mechanical energy of the motor to the transmission. The solution then is to replace the broken coupler. Click on the link below for the detailed step-by-step procedure in replacing the motor coupler.

The machine will not spinn, the washing is very wet when finnished washing

clothes are wet after spinning this is due to faulty Motor coupler. test the motor coupler, re-start the washer in its spin cycle. Let the machine run for a minute, and then open the lid and notice whether the tub is spinning:If it's spinning when you lift the lid, the coupler is fine.If not then the coupler is broken. It has to be replaced;.This plastic-and-rubber component is mounted to the shaft of the motor on one side, and to the transmission on the other. Over time, the coupler wears out and fails. When that happens, you need to replace it completely. ----------------------- If the washer doesn't reach its proper spin speed, the clothes may be too wet at the end of a cycle. Check to be sure the load is properly balanced and run a spin cycle again. If the clothes are still wet, you may have a worn motor pulley or tub bearing. Replace the applicable component. Thanks.

Yes sir, a bad motor coupler could cause the machine not to spin. You did the right thing in checking out the lid switch and the pump first. It sounds as if the motor coupling is worn and may be slipping. I will attach a link to a video that may assist you. Hope this helps and best wishes.
