I have since turned the breaker off and on and the inside unit is coming on and you can feel the air blowing at the vents BUT its not cooling. I also noticed that outside unit does not appear to be on--fan is not turning at all. Melvin: In answer to your questions, yes it's turned to cool and it is programmed but not cooling with program or bypassing program. Any suggestions? After I got it to come on, I thought that I might just need freon but then I noticed the outside unit wasn't coming on and now I'm afraid that maybe the outside unit might have to be replaced!?

Do you have thermostst turned to cool, and the other question is do you have a programmerable thermostat if so you need to program your thermostat to the desired temp and the desire time of day and days of the week, and then press run program

The first thing I would check is to see the condensing coil is clean. Take a garden house and wash it thoroughly. If it is severely clogged you may need to remove the top and clean it with water pressure blowing from the inside out. This may stop the overheating.

Air Conditioner shut down.

Set your thermostat to "ON". If the system continues to shut off and resumes later then you have an electrical failure within the unit or its just cluttered with junk. Check through the vent holes visually for debri. If there is enough to cause concern, remove the nuts holding the grill above the fan once you have flipped the breaker for the unit. (you definately dont want that thing kicking on with your arm inside)

if the unit stays on then you have a bad thermostat.
also pay attention to the temp of the exterior unit, if it gets too hot to touch then that is a sign of an electrical component failure and needs to be diagnosed through more troubleshooting

nope, nope, sounds like a stuck contactor in the electrical compartment of the condenser, but there are actually several things that could cause it.

If both fans runs (inside and outside), check if the compresor runs , if does probably the unit is low in freon and needs to be recharged after the freon leak has been fixed (remember this is a seal system and it shouldn't leak), but if the compressor doesn't work , it could be the capacitor , the pressure switch (if it's low on freon ) or the compreessor itself. But befor do anything ,if you have a digital thermostat replce the batteries.

Use the spell check and please restate your issue. Have you checked your air filter? Has the unit been serviced recently?

Central air conditioner doesn't turn on... Any suggestions?

If the compressor turns off and won?t come back on during a very hot day, the unit may have built up a high "head" pressure and the high-pressure limit switch may have tripped. This is usually located right inside the access panel on the compressor unit. Simply push the button to return it to operation. If your central air conditioner doesn't go on automatically: 1) Be sure the thermostat is set to "cool" and set below room temperature. 2) A central air conditioner should be on a dedicated 240-volt circuit; check the main electrical panel and any secondary circuit panels for a tripped breaker or blown fuse. If you find the problem here, reset the breaker or replace the fuse. 3) Make sure the furnace power switch is turned on and that the outdoor condenser's power switch, mounted on the outdoor unit, hasn't been shut off. Also be sure the 240-volt disconnect next to the compressor (in a metal box, usually mounted on the house wall) hasn't been shut off. 4) Turn off the power to the air conditioner and check the thermostat. 5) Remove the thermostat's cover and unscrew the wire from the Y terminal. 6) Turn the power back on. 7) Holding the wire by its insulation, touch the bare end to the R terminal and hold it there for about 2 minutes. If the compressor kicks on, the thermostat is faulty; replace it or call an air conditioning technician. If the compressor doesn't go on when you hold the two wires together, turn the power back off and call a service technician.
