I'm not from the UK so can't help you find a lab. but regarding your problem - The fact that it works well without a tape tells us that the load motor and possibly even the capstan motor and associated mechanisms are working. It doesn't tell us much about anything else though. Could be that the head drum is not spinning - This can be the result of a siezed drum motor, or power supply fault(if seized it will draw excess current, thus giving a battery warning indication). A faulty, or possibly even a correcly working dew sensor - This will allow the heads to spin, but prevent the tape from actually lacing up. This is a 'hard' one really, because if the dew sensor is faulty you will get this problem, but you will get the same problem when the sensor is working and actually doing its job in that it has really detected moisture. There are many other possible causes too. The first thing to look for is to see if the heads are spinning - or at least see if they *try* to spin, because unless they *are* spinning the tape will never load. Also, the heads *shouldn't* be spinning with no tape inserted - if they are then this suggests that the dew sensor has been activated (the heads are made to spin under this condition in an attempt to dry things out). If this gives no clues, the next step would probably be to dismantle the thing and attempt to load a tape by hand (looking for signs of jamming mechanism, etc. Anything more serious than this is one for the workshop. Platano guatemalteco? Good luck!

SOURCE: The no tape and eject symbols are flashing at the same time.

Those signs means Record tab on tape is ON, eject tape and check record tab and make sure to set it on Record position.

SOURCE: My Sony Handycam DCR-HC26 started giving me

the error c:31:23 error pertains to one of the reel (part that turns the tape) is malfunctioning. although you can play back videos, you would definitely have issue w/ recording, rewinding or fast forwarding the tape.what you can do is to turn the camcorder off.remove the battery and ac adapter for at least a minute.insert the battery or reconnect the adapter.you can also try pressing the reset button (located near the top of the speaker, on the panel where lcd screen goes to).make sure cam is on when you do that.if still your getting this problem, service would be needed for your cam.hope this helps :)

This is a simple case of the Bat going dead, it does look from what I read that the Sony batteries do not seem to stand up long these days, I am hearing of this daily on the Mini Cameras, where my old faithful 8mm camera bat is 8 years old and as good as new.

My Sony Handycam DCR-HC30E mini DV is not working

In many cases I found DC Jack defective in this model and resulted does not charge battery through ac charger nor power up directly with ac charger.
I would suggest to check ac charger and battery on similar model Sony camcorder and I think your camcorder has DC jack problem thats why camera is not getting power from ac charger.
