Your TV will have a setting somewhere in the setup menu that will allow the screen to auto format the incoming signal. Your source (cable box, satellite receiver or whatever you have) will also have a setting for auto formatting. There will still be some broadcasts that will have the letterbox effect which will give you a black band on the top and bottom of the display. If you prefer not to see this you can then use your TV's zoom feature to expand the picture and fill in the black bands. Doing this will cut off some of the viewing area's top, bottom, and side area.

When playing DVD movies there as black bars on top and bottom of screen..is there a setting to fix this

This is normal for an older TV, if your TV remote has a button for 4:3, or Wide Screen, try pressing those- it will enlarge the picture to full screen.

The icon on my iPad used to flip the netflix picture onto my tv has disappeared from my iPad consequently I can only watch the movie on my iPad rather than my tv.

Touch the bottom of the screen: the navigation menu will appear with the full screen at the far right down of the iPad and next to the left the little square box with a triangle of airplay to send to your apple Tv. you can watch directly from your apple TV also.

Hi,

Welcome to Fixya. If you want to enlarge the picture or change the aspect ratio just press "A" on the keyboard. However the picture quality will change depends on the resolution of movie that you're playing

Wide screen lcd simple question.

Hi pooing stone,

You may sometimes find that even with a television referred to as “widescreen,” widescreen movies still have letterboxing.

This is likely because the movie you are playing is still in the ratio used at a theater. While most televisions are 4:3 for the more square-type or 16:9 for widescreen, a theater screen is much wider still. Unless the movie has been reformatted specifically to 16:9 for your television, you will either see letterboxing or lose portions of the picture by zooming in.

If a movie is available in several ratios, I suggest thinking of all the options before buying. Although purchasing a movie reformatted to 16:9 will prevent the black bars, purchasing it without any reformatting of the size will prevent you losing part of the picture.

FYI: It is very common with Blu-Ray Discs that widescreen means original size, not 16:9.

Thank you,
Jason,

Movie Files will not display on the TV.

Its quite possible your laptop has lost its association with your TV as a "secondy monitor".

To check this, minimise everything and right click on the desktop and go to Properties. Then navigate to the settings tab. This will show you how many displays it considers itself to have.

Click on number 2 (if visable) and click on extend my windows desktop to this monitor.

You should now be able to go between screens

How do I set the DVD picture to Full Screen as opposed to Wide Screen?

That is the way the DVD makers intended it to be. The TV cannot be adjusted to change that if it is a widescreen or "letterbox" movie.
