Question about D-Link AirPlus Xtreme G DI-624 Wireless Router (DI624RE)
Sometimes different things can cause signal interference with a wireless router and reciever. If the desktop is near a wirless land phone or baby monitor for example that can cause interference. Even a neighbor could have a device causing interference. And also different wireless adapters are not all equal. Some may work better then others. Your laptop may have a better reciever than your desktop(my laptop has a better signal than my desktop and they are the same distance away). Also check the wireless antenna on your desktop. It may have come loose or moved into a different position. There are optional antenneas you can buy that are larger and better at picking up the wireless signal or for the router to increase the signal strength. They also make wireless extenders that you can install to increase the signal strength. And you can go into the router set-up menu and increase the signal strength and this may help. You could also try updating the wireless adapter drivers on the desktop...this may help to increase signal strength. Let me know if you have more questions.

I was having the identical issue with the same unit. After updating the firmware to the most up to date version I still had the issue. I found that when I started getting consistent low signal levels rebooting the router and my cable modem would usually resolve the issue. Also, depending on what your surrounding environment is (do you have wireless phones, do your neighbors have them, is there some type of wireless antenna in your area) the rebooting may not be enough. I ended up switching my phones to the DECT type as they won't interfere with the wireless router. I also found that when I upgraded to the Wireless N protocol the problem completely vanished. If you are connecting from a computer on a different level in your house each wall and floor you go through is the equivalent of having an extra 50-75 feet between your computer and the router.
