I have a DLINK router 552 not the one I used the dropdown to chose. Do you know the steps taken to upgrade the firmware. I am reluctant to do it for fear of losing my connection. What about a non omnidirectional antenna?

Sometimes different things can cause signal interference with a wireless router and reciever. If the desktop is near a wirless land phone or baby monitor for example that can cause interference. Even a neighbor could have a device causing interference. And also different wireless adapters are not all equal. Some may work better then others. Your laptop may have a better reciever than your desktop(my laptop has a better signal than my desktop and they are the same distance away). Also check the wireless antenna on your desktop. It may have come loose or moved into a different position. There are optional antenneas you can buy that are larger and better at picking up the wireless signal or for the router to increase the signal strength. They also make wireless extenders that you can install to increase the signal strength. And you can go into the router set-up menu and increase the signal strength and this may help. You could also try updating the wireless adapter drivers on the desktop...this may help to increase signal strength. Let me know if you have more questions.

I was having the identical issue with the same unit. After updating the firmware to the most up to date version I still had the issue. I found that when I started getting consistent low signal levels rebooting the router and my cable modem would usually resolve the issue. Also, depending on what your surrounding environment is (do you have wireless phones, do your neighbors have them, is there some type of wireless antenna in your area) the rebooting may not be enough. I ended up switching my phones to the DECT type as they won't interfere with the wireless router. I also found that when I upgraded to the Wireless N protocol the problem completely vanished. If you are connecting from a computer on a different level in your house each wall and floor you go through is the equivalent of having an extra 50-75 feet between your computer and the router.

Either move the computer closer to the router or the router closer to the computer. You could also try connecting the usb adapter to a usb hub to remove any interference from the computer.

Sounds like you need a new wireless card in the one that shows low signal strength. You can buy a good usb wireless card that gets a great signal for less than $30.00

Mazmart -
This is one of the best questions I've had in a long time. Your question is difficult to answer, however, since you made a change to your setup prior to this issue, I would REVERSE this change. WIFI can be finicky, so this very well may be due to moving it. Move it back. If that fixes it, then do not move it again (I haven't told you much yet).
If you NEED it there, then research "WIFI repeater." I'm not allowed to endorse any particular product, but this should get you on your way to expanding your network.
I can tell by your question that you are more capable than most users. I think this advice will serve you well!

I have a M10 Valet. 2 computers downstairs have excellant signal while computer upstairs has low signal. Is there an exspander that works with the Valet

You can get a Linksys Access Point (WAP) to entend the signal.

Expanders do not work too well.

If I could be of further assistance, let me know. If this helps or solves the issue, please rate it and give a testimonial for my response

Thanks, Joe

Hello
This not a big deal for a wireless network to work on downstairs, you need to check your connection and settings of the routers/computers. or just put a repeater for improvement of signal strength.
If the matter is signal strength, for the purpose see the TIP link below

Low signal strength

Having many users connected to a single WAP (wireless access point) will not affect the signal strength. It will however, affect the speeds each user is capable of.

Most Linksys routers have a homepage address of 192.168.1.1 - Enter this in your web browser.

From there you will be able to find wireless settings and enable either a password or a WEP key for security.

If you found this helpful please leave feedback.

If you have concrete floor slabs the the wireless signal from the Linksys will have a difficult time penetrating the floor slabs.
The wireless card in the computers will show a low signal strength.
Try altering the Linksys aerial to a horizontal position and also positioning the Linksys to another location.

You could be getting interference form other wireless sources, check the wireless channels of other wireless router/access points in your area. If they are broadcasting on the same channel then configure your Linksys to broadcast on an unused channel or one that has the weakest signal strength.
If none of these methods work then I would suggest you run network cables from the Linksys to upstairs and downstairs and not use the wireless connection.
If network cabling option is not an option then consider extending the wireless range with wireless repeater access points.

Weak signal 60 feet away at neigbhoor's

Some routers just don't put out strong signals. The problems could be wiring in/around/at your house or neighbors....causing weak signal. Are the signal strengths strong in your house?

We have super signal strength on ours upstairs (we have a bi-level house) but downstairs the signal is very low. All the wiring in the house and anything electronic or otherwise can block it.

Hope this helps at least some. Good luck!
