Question about Hitachi 57F500 57" Rear Projection HDTV-Ready Television
This is called a convergence problem.
This set uses two convergence IC'S---either STK-392-110 OR STK-392-150 (THEY are both the same but the 150 is a higher current device and lasts longer.)
The reason they fail is simple. They are black and about 2 1/2 inches wide X 1 1/2 inches tall and located on two metal heat sinks side by side--each has 18 pins--the back of each chip is metal--a white grease (called heat sink compound) is applied to each chip to transfer heat quickly--after several years the grease dries out and one of them reaches a point where it does not move the heat to the metal fast enough---the chip fails.
You can buy both chips (a pair) on Ebay for less than 14 dollars plus shipping (the chips will have the STK number printed on them in white.)
If you can do this repair yourself you can save a lot of money--most shops charge 300-400 for this type of repair---I have done hundreds of them and here charge 200-250 for this repair.
If you cannot do the repair--shop around your area and find someone who can do it right in your home--if they say it has to go to the shop--keep looking as any good tech can do this repair in your home in about 1 hour.
Usually just both chips need to be replaced, sometimes there may be a burnt or discolored resistor around them that also needs to be replaced.
AFTER the chips are replaced and the set adjusted with the remote---you should not have this problem for 5-8 years......
