The shift button is stuck... I believe my daughter spilled something there... how do I clean it?

Things it could be:

1. Shift cable
2. Shift interlock solonoid
3. Cable running from ignition sw to shifter

also check: shiftlock solenoid is sticking (from gunk in there, spilled soda etc). I would Remove shifter and clean all components first, with attention to the shiftlock solenoid unit

Make sure the brake lights actually work.

Also there is usually a small removable piece on the shifter (a plug filling a hole) after removing it you can stick something in there to release the shift interlock to be able to override it and shift it.

Or the shifter is broken, or gummed up with something that was spilled on it.

Something spilled into shifter binding mechanism. Clean with windex for best results.

Sounds as if you may have had a spill of something sticky in the switch. Try taking the switch out and cleaning it.

If water was spilled in it, the batteries should have been removed immediately, if you could remove the circuit board from the casing, dry it off and place it under a lamp for a few hours it should have been perfectly fine. If a soft drink, sugar base or other substance was spilled in it; the board would need to be cleaned, a small amount of soap and water can work, use a cotton swab, only clean the affected area of the spill, make sure to rinse all the soap off, dry with towel, then place under a lamp to get all the moisture out. Also make sure you clean the bottom side of the buttons that contact the circuit board. If it doesn't work then you may have to buy another unit.

If you have spilled any coke or coffee on shifter it will cause the shift lock actuator to stick if you have floor shifter. You will have to remove center console to clean. If nothing has been spilled shift lock actuator needs to be replaced.

Sounds like a stuck button!

Look for the button that is depressed... or the button that has that person that the set is always calling and remove that button with a key/ small knife/ screwdriver or something.

When you take this button off the set, I bet that your set will start working again.

Clean that button, maybe there is something spilled on it.

I would say you spilled something on it. You can try to take it apart and clean it, but I would guess it needs a new button board.
