Have you looked in the menu for a Reset mode?
Probably worth a try. Are your batteries ok?
Do not physicaly restrict the lens movement.

Canon EOS 50D camera error 231

If you have another lens, try it with that lens and see if it works properly. Many times ERR 99 is caused by a failure of either the circuit or the aperture unit in the lens.

Otherwise the most common cause usually is a faulty shutter.

My lens keeps sticking, then it shuts down the camera. I sent it to Canon in Jhb and they said there were no spares available, this was about 2 years ago.

This is the earlier versions and if Canon does not have spares the only way out for you to change the spares is to try for some freelance camera service shop.
Unless the correct spare is available which can be the lens control system it will not be possible.

My Canon 4000D keeps comming up with

First, is the lens older than about five/six years old? If so then the electronics are almost certainly incompatible.

Error 99 is a generic code to say the camera isn't communicating with the lens. The first thing to try is thoroughly cleaning the contacts on the lens mounting flange, whilst doing so clean the contacts on the camera body as well. Don't use anything metallic to do this with.

If this fails then you either have a faulty lens or simply an incompatible one. By turning the lens slightly as if you're removing it, you can ensure that the contacts don't align correctly and then may be able to use the lens fully manually. Focus the old fashioned way and if there's an aperture ring you can set it to what you require: the viewfinder display may not show the correct exposure but will expose correctly when you press the shutter. It's a real bodge though and not something you'll be happy doing for very long.

The lens wont close and it keeps saying on screen "lens error restat camera" but when i turn it back on it doesnt do anything

Your lens frame - that which moves out when the camera opens is probable bent. Looking down at it from the top and sides, does it look bent? By grasping is firmly but not hard try softly to bend the lens frame in the opposite direction, carefully.

E18

E18 is the canon fault number for lens error. Is the lens stuck out? does it click when the camera is switched on? Try lightly tapping the lens on a hard surface. This sometimes resets the lens. If all this fails take it to bits! (but watch the flash module as this can give a nasty shock.Big black capacitor) You will see the lens module take the it to bits carefully and re seat the components. I have done a few over the years. It takes about an hour. If you have any more issues contact me.

Lens will not retract

I had a Canon IXUS II do this.

Unfortunately it required a new lens which the repairer could not supply due to its age. The repairer replaced the camera for the same cost with much more recent model! The repair cost was £70 plus postage. (This was 4 years ago now when a new camera would have cost over £199).

If its under warrantee use it - Sadly it might be cheaper at todays prices to replace it instead of have it fixed.
