Question about Dell Studio XPS 16 Notebook

A letter on my keyboard stopped working. Can I home-repair?

My cat spilled soda on the keyboard and while it didn't damage any of the actual hardware inside, the keyboard got sticky and a single letter no longer works: the letter 't'. I could and may send it in to Dell to have it repaired, but are home repairs easy to do for something simple like a keyboard?

Unfortunately I've cleaned the keyboard as thoroughly (and carefully) as I could. I was just curious how easy it would be to replace on my own as opposed to having a professional do it. I already looked up prices and everything. Luckily Dell is sending out an on-site technician so I don't have to go anywhere or pay anything. Thank you for the input though, much appreciated.

Changing a keyboard on a laptop is not as simple with a laptop as just unplug it and plug a new one in. But the are relatavely inexpensive. Laptop keys usually pop off, try to carefully pop one off then you can take a Qtip with some windex on it and remove the soda. Do not use to much liquid and make sure everything is completly dry before you turn it back on.

Keyboards are very inexpensive. Throw that one away and buy a new one.

Dell inspiron 1525 functions keys are not working

The two most common input devices for the Dell Inspiron 1525 are the keyboard and mouse.

Although the mouse is an almost indispensable tool in navigating through programs and websites with your laptop, the keyboard offers quick shortcuts to open and manipulate files and information.

An unresponsive keyboard can indicate a deeper problem and require troubleshooting to narrow down the cause and find the proper solution.

Laptops are collections of complicated computer components and sometimes a file or two can become damaged and affect the way the machine behaves.

The first action to perform when things aren't working right is to reboot. When your laptop restarts, it essentially resets all the files and programs to the "starting" position and corrects any small errors that may have occurred during the last session.

Eliminate Conflicting Hardware

With an almost unlimited number of accessories, programs and software available for your 1525, it's possible something else installed on or connected to your computer is interfering with its ability to properly communicate with the keyboard.

Shut down the laptop and disconnect everything attached to it.

Power up and test the keyboard.

If it works, start reconnecting each accessory, one by one, until the keyboard stops working. You've found your culprit.

Try External Keyboard

To determine whether the problem exists in the keyboard itself a hardware problem or with the software that controls keyboard function, attach an external keyboard and see if it works.

If it does, the problem with your 1525's keyboard may lie in the keyboard itself, such as a loose cable.

If the external keyboard doesn't work, the problem may lie with the operating system's software that controls keyboard function, such as the drivers.

Update Software

Sometimes a laptop will stop functioning properly due to out-of-date drivers or other software. Always check Microsoft's website for any updates available for your operating system and check Dell's website for updates to the drivers and BIOS installed on your system.

In many cases, installing the latest updates will help correct issues and keep your system working smoothly and efficiently.

Check for Damage

Physical damage, such as a liquid spill and short circuits, can prevent the keyboard from operating properly.

Any amount of liquid spilled on your keyboard can cause a short circuit to the components and a sticky beverage such as juice or soda can cause the keys to stick and become unresponsive.

Clean the spilled liquid from under the keyboard fix sticky keys.

Laptop repair shops can do this for you if the task is out of your comfort zone.

Hope this helps

Letter "V" won't type at

Sounds like a keyboard spill. If what was spilled didn,t have sugar or cream in it tou might just stand it on it's back for a day or so and it may dry out.

My letter 'o' suddenly stopped working now i cant type my password in, i've tried a cold hairdryer to blow any dust or dirt that maybe under the letter, and a soft clean make up brush but nothing seems to...

I would try a battery pull if you haven't already.
It's most likely moisture damage, I would remove the back cover of your phone and check the battery. There is a white moisture strip on the battery. If it's pink/red and not white, you have moisture damage.
If you can't think of any spills, there are a few other things that could have happened.
For example having it in your pocket while you were sweating heavily?
Or having it in a high humidity environment like a steamy bathroom?
Drop in in the snow?
The only real way to get it fixed is to replace the keyboard entirely.
Thankfully on the BlackBerry it's not too difficult and the keyboard isn't too expensive.
If it's under any sort of warranty, take it to your carrier and they should just replace it.
If not, go to eBay and purchase a BlackBerry Curve 8520 keyboard, then view the video to see how to replace the keyboard.

Spill on key board and now the letters are not typing

If you spilled water then shut off the laptop NOW and let it dry out for about 3 days. If you spilled soda or juice then you will probably need to have the keyboard replace. Hopefully the liquid did not get to the motherboard or then you might have to have that replaced also.

Spilled soda on toshiba laptop m505, keyboard is not working. keys don't stick anymore but not working. what do you recommend to fix it?

You need a new keyboard. The sugar in the soda caused the damage and will further corrode the keyboard.

I would also recommend that you clean the area where the soda may have spilled to on the system board.

If I could be of further assistance, let me know. If this helps or solves the issue, please rate it and give a testimonial for my response

Thanks, Joe

Keys on the keyboard do not spell the words correctly

First of all check the keys carefully to see that no key is depressed(especially Function and Toggle keys) ok. Drag your pc to Safe Mode by pressing F8 key before it boots to Windows. Allow to stabilize on the desktop and try the keys again. If it doesn't work properly here, then I'm afraid it has to be taken to the specialist. Good luck.

Spill soda on my laptop keyboard

It is likely the only problem is that the soda is causing the keys to stick. There is probably no damage to any other internal components. Usually, laptop keyboards have a metal-based frame/tray that will protect the internal components from minor spills.

If you want to get rid of the cracking sound, you'll need to purchase a replacement keyboard from the laptop manufacturer or another source such as eBay, and then remove the sticky keyboard and replace it with the newly purchased one.

Top letters pressed also types the above numbers

Hi there.
After a liquid spill on the keyboard and you have done your best to clean it and the keys still do the same thing, your only option is to replace the keyboard.
I have come across this problem many times, some keyboards you can clean and bring them back to good working order and others you have no choice but to replace.
Liquids like soda or sweet coffee do the worst damage to keyboards.

Good luck and thanks for using Fixya!!!

Keyboard

Solution #1, Go to RUN type in 'msconfig'.
In startup uncheck MotiveSB.
Try to reinstall the keyboard driver. Solution #2
Sounds like it may also be dirt or some spilled soda.
-- Had the same problem after an OJ spill. --
If you feel comfortable about removing the keyboard, disconnect all the wires and cables, then give the keyboard a thorough washing. Then let it dry overnight.
If that doesn't sound like something you want to attempt, then you will have to take it in to a computer shop.
