i'm having the same problem with my toshiba satellite m-100. when i try to turn it on, the power LED lights up and the hard disk chugs, then nothing happens. no loading, no screen, nothing.

i have been advised that it's most likely a faulty motherboard. is this true?

I have a Toshiba Satellite with the same problem. The power button lights up, the fan runs for a few seconds (I guess the disk spins up a bit), but the screen stays dark, the CD Drive will not open, and that's about it. When plugged in to AC I get all three green lights, when on battery I get the appropriate two green lights.

I took it to a repair shop, they tell me the hard disk is ok, the screen is ok, and the power supply etc is good. They THINK the motherboard has gone bad. I'm still trying to resolve this.

I have a Toshiba M35x-S161, PSA72U-2JX28K Satellite Laptop which was given to me by my brother in law. This laptop is having the same problems as posted by other users. The Laptop has been off for about 2 years, when I first plugged the power cord in, I waited about 30 seconds and tried to boot it, the power button lite up, a 'sound' came from inside, sounded like a fan or hard drive, it lasted about 2 seconds, quit and that was it. I also noticed that the Battery lite was yellow, indicating low charge so I pulled the cord and battery, then plugged the battery back in and the cord and left it alone for 2 hours. When I tried again, the same thing happened, however this time the Battery light stayed green, indicating that it was charged, and I assume the power supply is working. (I've also pulled the battery and tried booting on the just the power supply cord and it does the same thing.)
The sound I mentioned is best described as a low hum that a fan or hard drive might make.
I've also pulled the ram (512), and put it into the other socket with no change.
I pulled the hard drive and with the use of an external caddy was able to access it. (though it won't let me into the windows directory.) I was told that this hard drive 'should work in another laptop. I tried it on a later model IBM think pad, and it wouldn't boot. screen came up, but final result was a black screen and a cursor. I also tried the IMB hard drive in this laptop and the same thing happened
I've yet to try the Ram in another laptop as of this writing, but will in the next day or so, though I don't think it is that.
I've also tried holding the Fn key while pressing the F5 key repeatedly thinking it might have been set accidentally to an outside monitor. This also did not produce any results.

History Prior to me getting this laptop, My Brother in law told me that he had to send it to the factory twice because of the power cord connection being bad. This has been fixed twice. He has had it looked at, and though he 'says' he doesn't remember exactly what he was told was wrong with it, he was quoted approximately 300.00 to fix it.

Hopefully I've given you enough information to work with in giving me some advice as to what to try next. I am going to attempt to repair this myself as I am trying to learn how to do this, so I've got a decent project on my hands right? lol. Hope you can help with some advice.. thank you for your time...

Ok folks, not to sure if anyone is following this, However, I posted a problem a week or so ago, and this is an update to that problem. in Regards to my Toshiba M35x-S161 problem with the screen not coming on nor booting up. This is an update and may not be the same for all of you concerned.
I have checked the ram memory and found that to be working, and as mentioned was able to access the hard drive using a caddy to see that it is intact. However, shortly after doing so (I had copied pictures to a thumb nail for my sister), I began to experience a slowdown on my IBM laptop. It suddenly hit me, VIRUS. I scanned the IBM through Housecall, and what ever was affecting it caused house call to shut down 3 times, but did finally clean it. I pulled the Toshiba's hard drive stuck it into the Caddy and ran a scan on it using AVG and yet another IBM that is clean. After a slow scan there it was, not 1, not 2, but 3 Trojan virus plus 2 down loaders and a few other goodies. With the now cleaned Hard drive, I tried booting the Toshiba, and at first I still experienced the same problem, then a funny thing happened. I laid the laptop down an hit the side of it and poof here came the boot up. Unfortunately, it wouldn't go all the way, but enough to tell me that 'MOST LIKELY' the Virus halted the computer operation but killing the boot sector, and secondly, because it was stalled out in the boot up, it over heated, and "may have" loosened a solder connection on or near the switch or the power connector. I haven't had the time to take the unit apart yet, but plan to as soon as I can get a couple of days off.
I don't know how many of you this may help out, but at least this forum gives me a place to post my progress... will keep you updated as I can..

Not enough information, what is model number of laptop, what is the noise? Are there any lights coming on? Does it work to charge the battery? Does moving the power connection make any difference? Post a little more information

thanks for the inappropriate rating. All I'm asking for is enough information to actually help out with the problem. Seems some people cannot be helped. Take a look at your question and equate it to going to a doctor. Human does not feel well, what is the problem? Do you think he might ask for a little information? You have the laptop I can't see it over the internet so it is up to you to post the appropriate information.

Have this check to your nearest brand service center. There might be problems on the video card. This might be due to excessive heat that is frying the parts of the laptop. This is a common problem for Toshiba laptops. Kindly check the exhaust if there is a clogging dirt, this is the main reason of excessive heating aside from the prolong use of your laptop. My best advise is go to the nearest service center.

1. Take the battery out of the laptop & try to turn on the laptop using power adapter only. If the computer turns on, then the battery is defective & needs to be replaced.
2. Make sure the power adapter is not defective. Test the output voltage of the power adapter using a voltmeter. Compare the voltmeter reading to the nominal value written on the adapter or the laptop.
3. If you have another processor which is compatible with your laptop's model, try swapping processors & test to see if the laptop will work.
4. The motherboard could be defective & needs to be replaced.

My old laptop toshiba m35x-s161 won't turn on the light on the power botton turns on and it makes some noise but nothing more happens

Sounds like there is a faulty connection between the power switch and the computer. Probably why its making a little noise.
Take in for repair and replace power button.

The problem of your laptop is in the RAM just clean the RAM by wiping an eraser of the printer or a rubber. To remove the RAM open the back of your laptop where the RAM was inserted.

This sounds like a hard drive is, or has failed. Either that or the RAM (memory has gone bad)
Did you let the laptop overheat? Was it left on for a long time? Or is this just an old machine ?
I would replace the hard drive, and reload the operating system, that is if you really want to keep the laptop. If that solves it great! Also, did you notice if there are any "beep" noises, or error messages when it acts up? Often times, you can go on the internet and find out what the messages mean.
