These types of 'severe' cartridge errors/alert messages (i.e. "refer to documentation" / "incompatible cartridges", "print cartridge(s) problem", etc.) typically indicates the internal micro-electronics of the HP #74/75 cartridge are damaged. The cartridge's electrical wire runs at rear and lower side of the ink cartridge, are very delicate and are somewhat susceptible to ink attack over time, which can lead to premature failures. In addition, the older the cartridge the higher the chance of an internal electrical failure. I suggest you first run a 'Tap 41' diagnostic test to check cartridges electrical health (this is a forced test); you may also bypass the error (temporarily) on most models which use HP 74/75 cartridges. SOURCE: Remove and check cartridge on right

How old is the printer? If it is over 2 years, buy a new one. It is not really worth have a service rep. come out and charge you $95 - $150.00 to look at. When you can buy a new one for $60.00. Unless, you have a special bond with the printer. It's up to you

SOURCE: Changing toner cartridge on copier

Open up the large front door, it will swing downwards. At the top section you'll see four boxes with front handles. Each of the boxes is a slide-out container of toner.

Follow the instructions on the new toner box to prepare it for the copier.

You'll note each toner box has a color designation (on a plastic label just above where you grab). Simply grab the handle on the one you need to replace, pull it out and then slide in a new one.

Also note there are four colors: Yellow, Magenta, Cyan and Black. The LCD screen should indicate which toner bottle(s) to replace.

My HP J6480 printer will not recognize the ink level on a new Officemax ink cartridge. printer keeps indicating that the ink cartridge needs replacing.

I have to ask this question of you, just to make sure this is not an issue. Are you using a factory new ink cartridge?
Please consider the following:
If you are using a refilled or third party cartridge that may well be your problem. Most manufacturers build logic into their products to prevent the use of “Other Equipment Manufactured” cartridges as well as re-filled cartridges.
They do this to prevent problems from contaminated inks causing problems with print quality or damaging the physical printhead.
If you are using factory new cartridges, then please call the manufacturers Technical Support for assistance with the warranty on the cartridges

Can you find a friend with a similar HP printer, i.e., one that accepts the same model-number of ink-cartridge? If the cartridge gives the same error-message in the other printer, it's time to responsibly recycle your "dead" cartridge, and give the brand-new cartridge to your friend, for his/her usage.

Cartridge error hp officejet j6480 generic cartridge

I own one of these printers and refill cartridges for a living. When you get this problem its best to return the cartridge for another, thats what I do for my customers.

When buying re-manufactured cartridges its best to buy from a local store and ask about there return policy before making your first purchase.

If you are buying from a reputable re-manufacturer then this will be a very rare problem. It happens with genuine HPs too.

BTW this printer uses HP 74 & 75 inks. when buying re-manufactured buy the HP 74xl which gives (according to HP) 750 printers compared to 200 from the HP74. Remanufactured HP75s are fill to HP75xl capacity.

Your printer is the genune hp printer. It will not show the ink level of refilled and non-HP cartridges. Try the original one the problem will get rectified.

Probably one of two causes:

1)Cartidge is Faulty/Out of Date/Not original.

2)Printer is Faulty.

Most HP cartridges have a specific life, no matter if you use it or not. You should check the cartridge life - its printed on the cartridge itself. If its in date and broken you can get a free replacement from HP. Try a new cartridge first.

If you are still getting an error message after changing the cartridge and your printer is no longer in warranty, its normally cheaper to throw it away than get it fixed. If its in warranty, call HP. They normally replace very quickly.
