Some of The Canon Powershot A530 and A540 cameras are subject to an advisory recall. Seems that a small spring on the battery compartment door can short out the batteries. Suspect this of yours, in that you mention that your batteries aren't lasting long. If your camera is on the list, Canon should fix this for you for free, including free shipping both ways. This is regardless of your camera's warranty status. Please check the following link for more info:

I am trying to get time and date to appear on my pictures taken with cannon powershot A540

The date and time (and a lot more) are stored with every picture in its EXIF metadata. Any photo viewing/editing program should be able to display this data. To print this data, please consult the documentation for whatever program you're using to print your pictures. Depending on the program and printer you may print the date on the image, in the margins, or on the back.

Power button only works when held on, the camera immediatly shuts off when the button is released. Cannon Powershot a540

This sounds like there is an internal energy conflict. check the following:
- Have you used a new battery to try it out? make sure it is the battery indicated by the manufacturer, yes it does make a difference.
- Is the door that holds the battery firm? if it is wobbly could be messing with the energy that is being giving to the camera
For repair check them out http://www.teleplancamerarepair.com/Canon_Powershot_A540
make sure you describe your problem to them
and they also include a camera cleaning, which all cameras could use

Cannon Powershot A540 SanDisk SDHC 4 gb I insert the card and receive a memory card error. Can't format

Hi,

A 4 gb memory card is beyond the capacity of your Cannon A540. It is too large. I would stick with a 1 gb card in that camera.

I´ve got the same issue. If you use the batteries that were in A540 in another camera, does it still work?
