Hey, I also got locked out of my computer several days ago.

I tried several free software. It took me two days and got quite messy.

Unfortunately none of them work for me. Finally I made it work with Windows Password Recovery Tool . The good news is that it works.

You can try this very efficient implementation and useful tool. It works for me.
& here I just list the simple steps:
Step 1: Download Windows Password Recovery Tool
Step 2: Burn bootable CD/DVD or USB flash drive
Step 3: BIOS setting
Step 4: Reset administrator password

If you're talking about the windows logon password, there are multiple free softwae solutions for that. Just google it. If you're talking about the BIOS or power on password, it can be done, but it's a pain.[really!] It involves shorting out the password chip on the motherboard. This requires complete disassembly of the laptop and is tricky to do.

There is a guy that sells the instructions on how to do it on the web. Again, just search it. As a last resort, a replacement motherboard for that model is only about 50 bucks on ebay. [or less] It's the sane way to go.

The above suggestions are under the assumption that you are the true owner of the laptop and have "Forgotten" your password. I do not condone or endorse any illegal activity.

If you are talking about windows admin password, you can boot your laptop with any Linux live distribution CD with NTpasswd. The one I use is Trinity rescue CD: http://trinityhome.org/Home/index.php?front_id=12&wpid=5

If you are talking about bios password, it is quite a bit more involved. If you can proof ownership, Dell can help you with the master password. If not, take a look at this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5JqB4lkVxkA

If you have the windows XP, when the computer start at booth, hit the F8 key to get the option to choose a safe mode. In safe mode will prompt the login as administrator. try with the "admin" word as password. That are default password in windows XP . If you can get in, go to control panel\users and remove the password.

Bought this C510 at a yard sale. No user or admin password available. Windows xp comes up but wants me to login as user, tried administrator and its password protected as well. System will not let me...

You can use external CD drive to reinstall windows, or use Superutilities CD to change the passwords. Also you can take the HDD out and attach it to a desktop PC to ghost an image on it.
You can too replace the internal CD drive with a working one.

If you're locked out of your computer, you can use a program such as OphCrack to recover passwords for local accounts. The LiveCD is incredibly easy to use, just boot from it and it does everything automatically.
