Check if you have any of following issues
1. Lens is not AF or AF-S
2. Try flicking the lens switch from A to M and back to A again, might solve any contact issues
3. In the menu system also you can navigate to select the manual or auto focussing. if this got set to 'Manual' mode by mistake the camera will not autofocus even if the lens switch is in Auto mode.

Something you have to understand, auto focus mechanisms work on the basis of measuring contrast.

What that means in English is that there have to be clearly identifiable lines or surfaces that can be discerned by the camera. If that is not available the camera can't focus and at night you can count on it that you won't be able to focus for that reason.

This is not a Nikon problem, it's a problem with all auto focus mechanisms of any brand.

What I'd suggest you consider is to focus manually. That immediately solves your problem. Alternately, try to auto focus on some other object that is about the same distance away, then hold your shutter button half way down, compose your shot and finally take the picture.

I hope that helps a little. Good Luck

Is adding grip for nikon d5100 solve the problem of auto focus with sigma 170-500 lens

No. This lens lacks an autofocus motor, relying on the camera to have one. The D5100 lacks an autofocus motor, relying on the lens to have one. Adding a battery grip does not change this situation.

The D5100 only autofocuses with lenses having an internal autofocus motor. Nikon designates such lenses AF-S, Sigma calls it HSM. Lenses without the motor will only autofocus with the larger and heavier Nikon cameras such as the D7000.

The lens will work with any Nikon film SLR, including the FG-20. However, the FG-20 is not an autofocus camera. Whether the lens is capable of autofocusing or not, you'll still have to focus manually. With a newer autofocus camera, such as the N75 and N80, the lens will autofocus.

Which Nikon S.L.R. cameras can I use my 70/300mm AF-S Nikor and still maintain auto focus, it is currently on a D40x

Every one (assuming the camera supports autofocus in the first place, of course--old film Nikons didn't). The lens has an autofocus motor, so the camera doesn't need one.

Film Nikons supported autofocus starting with the N2000. (Actually, the F3 also had autofocus capabilities, but used a different system). All the digitals support autofocus.

Just bought a new eos d600 . How do I turn on the autofocus?

Set the autofocus switch on the lens to AF. Press the autofocus button on the camera (right on the cursor pad) to bring up the AF mode. Use left/right or turn the command dial to select the desired autofocus mode and press SET.

It's in the "Changing the Autofocus Mode" in the manual (page 83 in my copy).

Hello - I am having an autofocus error issue.

Check the camera and make sure that autofocus is on on both the lens and the camera, if they both have switches.
Check the autofocus mode, whether it's single, or continuous. If it's in single, it'll only focus once per time you half-press the shutter release, continuous it'll continue to focus as long as your finger is down.
If that doesn't work, try another lens and see if the problem still persists. Otherwise, contact the manufacturer, as it could be hardware related.
Remember, cameras do not autofocus well in low light.

Please check if the Autofocus-switch on your lens is set to M/A. Also check if the Autofocus on your camera is switched on. For detailed information about your cameras autofocus, please check this site: http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/d40/af-settings.htm

Try you 18-200 lens on another Nikon DSLR. If it still does not Autofocus. It is the lens. Sometimes the electrical contact points of the lens are not making correct contact with the camera. ok?
