Scratched front lens element

I have the 28-135mm IS auto-focus lens that came with my EOS 40D and the front lens element has been pretty badly scratched. I am looking for an estimate on having that lens element replaced and places where I can have it done...any help would be appreciated.

Well, you cannot buy the front element by itself. The whole front optic set comes as a unit. You can call Canon USA, ask for parts,

The part number you are inquiring on is: CY1-2800

Have you taking any pictures with the lens? usually it takes quite a bit of damage to effect images. The rear optics are the more sensitive glass on all lenses

I adjust the lens by my self, you have to remove the plastic cover ring (it's just attached by glue)
and you will see 3 screws, unscrew and remove the scratched lens, insert the new one, put back the 3 screws but don't lock the lens and adjust it by turning till the meter scale reading corresponding to the right focusing distance measured by a meter, then you can lock the lens.

Canon 40D will no longer work if on auto focus. Will only take a picture in manual focus.

When in auto focus does the lens try to focus?
Sounds like your lens is the problem, you can try to clean the gold contacts on both the camera and on the lens with a pencil eraser (Make sure not to get any eraser dust in either the camera or the lens). If you can try a different lens on your camera and see if that one will work.
Please post a comment if you need more help on this.

Try taking the battery out and putting it back in. If that doesn't work try cleaning the len's contact sesnors with a pencil eraser.

Auto focus not working

The lens AF mode is not working. What lens is it you are using?

It is not a camera issue but a lens issue. Try a different lens to be certain.

Auto focus does not appear to be working

Make sure AF switch is "ON" on the camera.
Still doesn't work?
Also, try another AF lens.

Canon Extender EX 1.4x ii not autofocussing

The EOS 40D only use auto focus up to aperture 5.6. Only the 1-series use auto focus up to aperture 8. The adapter adds 1 stop to the lens aperture. Since the 100-400 is a 4.5-5.6, the aperture range with the extender mounted will be 6.3-8.
There is a work around though. Just place a thin strip of insulating tape over the three pins on the lefthand side (lens side of the extender). No damage will occur to the camera or teleconverter.

Canon EOS 40D not working when turned on

I'm sorry to tell you this but you do NOT have anything set wrong. To test my theory turn your camera to full auto. Next make sure your switch on the lens is set to auto. Then just try taking some shots of some objects across the room. If that doesn't allow you to take pictures do the exact same test with a different lens. That way you've taken the lens out of the equation. Sorry I couldn't give you a better answer but I'm pretty sure you'll need to return the camera to cannon.
