The calculators have different modes and since you did not tell us what model you have we can only tell you to look for what is commonly called "engineering" mode which will use decimal notation.

### If a decimal # has a value less than 1 do you put a zero to the left of the decimal point?

There is no rule requiring a zero to the left of the decimal point, but it's generally considered good style.

You don't put a zero to the right of the decimal point unless it's significant (that is, you know that digit is not 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, or 9).

There are no decimal digits in this number. You can put a decimal mark in 8 537 000. and append two zeros, or more. But I would not call that rounding 8 537 000.00

### Hi, I have a Sharp ELW535 Calculator and by accident I changed the mode that it is in... so now it gives me a fraction answer and not decimal. Ex, I put in 52/48 it gives me 1 1/12 Do you know how to fix...

There is nothing to fix as what you describe is not a flaw, it is a feature. You calculator has a key marked CHANGE between (x,y) key and ) key. To change a result from fraction to decimal or from decimal to fraction, you press the CHANGE key.

### Wont put answer in decimal form Example 252/5

To compute a single result in decimal, press diamond ENTER instead of ENTER. You can also use diamond ENTER to convert a result to decimal. To have all results come out in decimal, press MODE F2, use down-arrow to move down to the "Exact/Approx" line, press right-arrow, then select "APPROXIMATE." Press 2ND [QUIT] to exit the mode screen.

### Cant get answers in decimal format, I would like to set up my casio fx83es so that the answer is in decimal format all the time.

Hello,
To make sure that results are always in decimal format, put a decimal mark (point) at the end of one integer.
ex: 1./2 or 1/2. or 1./2. display as 0.5, so does 1. + 1/2
To convert from decimal to fraction and from fraction to decimal press a b/c
To convert from proper to improper fractions use [SHIFT][d/c]
Hope it helps.

### Convert 4 2/9 to a decimal

Step 1: Find a number you can multiply by the bottom of the fraction to make it 10, or 100, or 1000, or any 1 followed by 0s. Step 2: Multiply both top and bottom by that number. Step 3. Then write down just the top number, putting the decimal place in the correct spot (one space from the right for every zero in the bottom number) Example 1: Express 3/4 as a Decimal Step 1: We can mulitply 4 by 25 to become 100
Step 2: Multiply top and bottom by 25:
×25 3 = 75

4 100 ×25 Step 3: Write down 75 with the decimal place 2 spaces from the right (because 100 has 2 zeros);

Example 2: Express 3/16 as a Decimal Step 1: We have to mulitply 16 by 625 to become 10,000
Step 2: Multiply top and bottom by 625:
×625 3 = 1,875

16 10,000 ×625 Step 3: Write down 1875 with the decimal place 4 spaces from the right (because 10,000 has 4 zeros);

Example 2: Express 1/3 as a Decimal Step 1: There is no way to multiply 3 to become 10 or 100 or any power of 10, but we can calculate an approximate decimal by choosing to multiply by, say, 333
Step 2: Multiply top and bottom by 333:
×333 1 = 333

3 999 ×333 Step 3: Now, 999 is nearly 1,000, so let us write down 333 with the decimal place 3 spaces from the right (because 1,000 has 3 zeros):
Answer = 0.333 (accurate to only 3 decimal places !

### Different answer fro my TI-89 AND MY tI-81

Hello,
Your TI81 can only perform numerical calculation: It always give uour numbers. The TI89, a more sophisticated calculator, can of course do numerical calculation, BUT ALSO symbolic ones. You ask it for the derivative of sin(x) and it will give you cos(x).
Anyway, if you want a decimal result for you calculation above one of the numbers must have a decimal point (instead of writing 2PI write 2.PI.

The TI 89 can do exact calculations. But if you want approximate results any number in the sequence of operations must have the mark of a decimal. Numbers without decimal marks are considered integers, Integer numbers with a decimal mark are treated as floating point numbers ( meaning decimal).

Hope it clarifies things for you.

### When I divide answers are always given in Fractions. Can I change it to come out in decimals?

To change from Fraction display to Decimal display on the Casio fx-300ES (and probably other calculators)

1) Press the "SHIFT" button
2) Press the "MODE/SETUP" button
3) Press the "2" button
This Changes it to LINEIO (Decimal)

Doing all of the above but pressing the "1" button instead of the "2" puts it back into MATHIO mode (Fraction)

Hope this Helps

(SHIFT)(MODE/SETUP)(2) to change to decimal
