Question about Craftsman Garden
18.5 Intek OHV Briggs - DLT 3000 Craftsman (Model # 917.275821 SN # 071905c001284) - I bought it in 2005 and it has never failed. I was mowing yesterday and I turned it off to close a gate. I got back on it and it wouldn't start - just backfired as I was trying to start. I disconnected the fuel line into the carb and it was pumping fuel out. I checked for spark on end of plug and it was jumping to the frame. I looked to make sure the flywheel key was not sheered - it is all fine. I sprayed quick start in the opening to the carb and it wouldn't even begin to fire. It feels like it is getting compression when I manually turn it. I am at a loss at what to try next. Anyone?
These guys are all wrong. Remove the valve cover and inspect the two pushrods, one (exhaust most likely) may have come off the rocker arm or is bent or even snapped.

Pull the flywheel off and I think you'll find the keyway is sheered. Looking down from the top it looks as though it is not sheered but more than likely it is. Quick enough way to know for sure.

I have the exact same problem. It was running fine then next time i went to start it it wouldnt start. I checked the fuel, spart, flywheel all are fine. Did you find the issue with yours?

Had the same problem with an almost new Craftsman w/ Intek 20.0 HP. Check all the "usual suspects" and had to have a tech come out. He had me start it. It ran for a few minutes and stopped (per usual). He immediately went to the Anti-Backfire solenoid. It is an electrically operated "plunger-style" fuel line blocker. They are famous for going bad. The part is about $65 and its sole purpose is to starve the engine of its fuel supply at shutdown so it won't backfire. If it is disabled, the user must throttle the engine down for 10 seconds or so before turning the key off in order to avoid backfires. Gee... let's see, 10 seconds of my time each time I use the mower vs $65 part ... No contest! Remove the solenoid, take a pair of electrician side cutters and snip off the tip of the plunger and reinstall it. Problem solved ! ! !
