Re: attachments

What type of file is it that you are trying to open, sometimes you will see gobbledegook if your computer doesn't have the right program to handle a PC word processing and your mac doesn't have Microsoft Office installed. It also could happen with other type of file such as an image, video etc.

Open office can open a number of word documents:

Gimp for macintosh opens a lot of image files:

also if you know what type of file it is, try adding an extension to it by placing a dot then follow it by typing the filetype. For a word document type in .doc for instance

IMac serial # removed from internal and external places? Have partial?

If you can boot up your iMac, you should be able to recover your serial number by clicking on the Apple icon in the upper left of the screen and selecting "About This Mac."

Your serial number will be there at the bottom of the window. Find your Mac serial number in About This Mac or System Information

I have downloaded Yosemite onto my MacBookPro, then new version of Pages and when I go to Edit/Special Characters I only get the choice of emoticons, pictures, images and no stuff I can use such as N-

After going to "Edit... Special Characters", and the emoticons you mention appear, you will see a little square box to the top right of the window (See attached screen grabs), select that and the box will change to many other characters available such as currency, math symbols etc. 25270620-4h1n3viq1e45slc30rcgtzer-4-0.png

Circle icon won't shut down apps on mac

We really need a little more info to answer this correctly. Which Circle Icon are you clicking to "shut down apps"?

In OSX, there are three circles or dots at the top-left of every active window. These are, starting at the left, Red: Close this window, Yellow: Hide this window, and Green: Maximize/Restore this window. Note that none of these Close or Quit the Application, only that particular window or instance of that app.

To actually Quit a particular application or program, you can use the keyboard command: Command-Q, or you can click the application menu and select Quit.

How do I get an iMac running lion to read the installation CD for a Breother MFC-J615W printer?

You may need to set the preference so the disk shows up on the desktop. First click on the FINDER icon. THat is the icon in the dock that looks like a smiley face. Then click on the FINDER menu in the upper left corner and choose PREFERENCES. There are several check boxes, make sure you check the one for CDs. Your disk might appear on the desktop.
If there are other problems you can also download the driver and software for your model directly from brother.

Mac will not boot, displays folder icon with alternating mac face symbol and ? symbol. have tried removing and externaly reformating the drive with no change. cannot get it to biit from cd

This situation comes when the System is not recognized. If you have tried to reformat the drive, then it will still display a folder icon with alternating mac face symbol, simply because no System is installed on the hard drive. To repair this, you should consider reinstalling the system using a System DVD (to boot from the dvd, hold the "c" key at startup.

Wont boot on its own, wont boot with install disc,

As the hard disk appears to be showing up when you boot up using the install disc, I would suspect that the system is somewhat corrupted. You could reinstall the system again and if you are happy starting from scratch and wiping the hard drive select this option failing that and there is some data on the imac you could install using the preserve user data. A fresh install should sort out any problems. Hope this helps.

Hard disk icon disappeared from desktop

To add the hard disk icon back onto your desktop, first click the "Finder" button in the dock. It is the dark and light smily face icon at the end of the dock.

Next, click the "Finder" menu item at the top of the screen and then "Preferences". In the "Finder Preferences" window that opens, click the "General" button. From there you can select what system items appear on your desktop. You can click "Hard disks" to re-add the hard disk icon.
