You may delete this file with no harm but it will return since its a information file. .ini file are files that Microsoft place in all your folders. The INI file format is a de facto standard for configuration files.

I have a harddrive which has my old windows vista computer backed up,but i cannot see the files even when i have chnaged permissions, what do i do?.

the files desktop.ini are system files, most are hidden files and we dont usually see them. if you have plugged in your old hard drive into a diff laptop to read it ,then you should try unhiding files . tools.organize/folder and search options/tab up top "view" ..then tick show hidden files. if you made a backup of your files while it was in a working laptop the chances are it will hide them ( because there important ) the desktop.ini file dose not open

There are two folder namely desktop.ini, desktop.ini automatically appeared in the desktop. I scan my computer using Microsoft security Analysis but these folders are not moved or deleted from the desktop....

This must be a worm that replicates files/folders. As we all know, desktop.ini is not a folder, it's a system file which can be opened with Notepad.

What antivirus were you using to scan your computer? This worm/s can be easily detected and deleted/repaired by avg free (click here to download avg free). [open the link and click green "Download" button]

Download and install the Avg Free. Run a full system scan and check the result. That will fix the issue related to your desktop.ini folder etc..etc..

If you need further help, let me know.

Good luck.

Thanks for using FixYa.

It looks like a custom view for a music folder. Try right-clicking on the folder in Windows Explorer, then select the 3rd tab, "Customize", and change your folder type.

What is desktop.ini is it a virus?

Since Desktop.ini is a Windows system file, you are probably seeing it because you have set Explorer to display hidden/system files. By reversing this setting, you can get rid of Desktop.ini.
  1. In any Windows Explorer window, click Tools → Folder Options…
  2. Click on the View tab.
  3. Check off the radio button next to “Do not show hidden files and folders”.
  4. Put a check in the box next to “Hide protected operating system files (recommended)”.
  5. Click OK.

the OPTIONS.INI file is there on the installation disc, its just hidden. EXPLORE the contents of the installation CD, the click TOOLS at the top of the screen>FOLDER OPTIONS>VIEW>tick "SHOW HIDDEN FILES AND FOLDERS. The OPTIONS.INI file can now be seen (along with other hidden files). Copy the whole lot to an empty folder on your desktop. Go to this newly created folder and open the OPTIONS.INI file. Just change the 0 to a 1 at the end of the command line in the file and save the change when prompted, then double click the SET UP file to launch the installation from your hard disc. This worked a treat for me and my daughter is very happy now. Thanks for the other help provided is this forum, Happy New Year! Steve.
