It may be the thermalcoupler. This would be the small metal rod that the pilot heats up during start up.This rod heats up and opens the gas flow to allow the unit to burn.If these get weak they can be unpredictable but will always shut off the gas supply if it fails. It should be replaceable. Best Wishes.

I have a pro com 30000 btu vent free heater.it keeps shutting off.how do I fix it.

If the thermocouple is bad, the pilot light will not stay lit. Sometimes the pilot will stay lit but when the unit turns on the gas for heat, things change a bit and the nearly bad thermocouple doesn't see the flame it should and causes the gas to shut off.
You can google the make / model of your unit with the word 'thermocouple' and see replacements for sale. Usually not much more than $25. Thermocouple Wikipedia the free encyclopedia

Heat exchanger

If the fan coming on blows out the pilot light it is a pretty good indication that the heat exchanger is cracked. You should not continue to use the heater. I recommend contacting a qualified service technician to check it out and confirm that it is a cracked heat exchanger. Hope this helps

No flame

Several steps here to check...
turn power off unit and back on
set thermostat to heat
watch for pilot to ignite..igniter should glow orange or cherry red or spark if its a spark type ignitor
Did you see a pilot light ignite?

If not you probably have a bad igniter.

If pilot lit....in a little bit you hear a click of the gas valve opening..then the main burners will ignite

If you see the pilot and the main burner lights but goes out in a few minutes or immediately you may have an issue of the "high limit" switch tripping.

Is the blower fan turning that blows air out of your vents?
are all your vents open in your house? too many times i see homes with almost all vents shut.

The pilot lights without problem but when I turn on the burner with a little bit of gas or alot the whole heater shuts down after a few seconds. What do I need to replace?

You need not replace anything. Only need to do a little bit of maintenance to the old bugger mate. Simply blow out the pilot safety feature. Dust builds up in the pilot safety and that makes it think the oxygen is low in the room and it shuts down. I have a great demo and a link that shows where to clean.

How do you shut down

the pilot light always stays on, its designed to allow your heater to turn on by itself without you needing to light a match every time. if the pilot light is burning you have nothing to worry about. its when the pilot light goes out that a small amount of gas leaks into the room. and by small i mean smaller than a hand held lighter... if you still want to shut the entire thing down you could turn off the gas line feeding the heater or possibly the whole house, otherwise the pilot light will stay on. as far as the actual heater turning off, thats probably controlled by some sort of thermostat somewhere. if you set the temp to very cold it should stay off. if that doesn't work then you may need a new thermostat.

There are two at the beach and they won't stay lighted. The pilot kicks on, then you hear gas, then it ignites with a big swoosh and immediately goes out. This happens over and over.

Sounds like the pilot sensor is dirty if you can see where the pilot light burns the will be a metal rod that senses the heat of the pilot and tells the burner it can come on. clean the rod with steel wool. even a little build up can shut the burner down.

Empire Wall Heater(propane) won't stay lit

You have a crack in your heat exchanger and it is sucking in products of combustion. Replace the heater. OR there is a blockage in the intake or exhaust vent. GET IT FIXED OR REPLACED!
