If it won't stay running then that would mean your carb needs cleaned and/or rebuilt. If the oil is comming out of your muffler than oil is getting by the piston and a new mower would be your best bet if you are unable to fix this yourself. Hope this info helps!

You may want to check the gas cap to see if it clogged with dirt. If the gas cap is clear, you more than likely have a carburetor problem. If you need tips on carb. cleaning, feel free to ask.

SOURCE: my lawn mower starts, but won't stay running.

After you check airflow (i.e. cleaning up the air filter), check fuel flow.

I'm assuming the gas is clean and fresh.

Is the gas flowing from the tank?
Is the gas getting into the carb?

If yes, then the next step is to remove the carb.
Check the diaphram between the carb and the tank, this acts as your fuel pump. Is this diaphram in good condition? If not replace it.

While the carb is removed, clean all the little ports (jets) into the carb with WD-40 or carb spray-on carb/choke cleaner (automotive section of your local auto store). Blow it dry with compressed air (canned or from a air compressor). Replace any gasket so the carb doesn't have seepage when reinstalled.

It may sound a bit daunting, but its an easy job and may stores carry the necessary parts. Try WalMart, or auto stores, if they don't then a good hardware store should. Or, a lawn mower shop should have it.

Good luck, I'm rebuilding doing the same thing to one of my mowers this week. Piece of cake.

My lawn mower will start then it will die after a few seconds, what could be the problem

If the mower was tipped it is quite possible oil from the engine has traveled up the breather and soaked the air filter in oil, this would richen the engine up and stop it running, remove the air filter and check for oil saturation.

What type of oil and gasoline do you nee d to run Craftsman 6.5 lawn mower?

generally all 4-cycle lawn mower engines are tuned to use regular unleaded gas ,(I personally use mid or high grade unleaded)....and for engine oil use strait 30 WT engine oil...... I often put a dash of fuel system cleaner in each gallon of lawn mower gas,it is not absolutely neccessary but seems to help moisture stay out of gas..(DO NOT USE HEET or other methenol based fuel additives for this can cause overheating or scoring of piston and cylinder...but rather use a petroleum based additive, this allows the small amounts of moisture in fuel to pass through the carbeurator without clogging filters or fuel system for smoother running)..also...if you put lawn mower up for winter it is always helpful to use a fuel stabilizer such as "STABIL" or other such products (follow directions for use) and be sure to change the crank case oil in the spring before using....this will give you much longer life from your lawn mower...
Keep air filter clean!!!..... Happy mowing!!!....so, the answer?...regular unleaded and 30wt engine oil...if you would like..they have special engine oil for 4-stroke engines at most hardware and walmarts n such...but is just expensive 30wt oil... Enjoy your day,Todd

Changing oil in my mtd lawn tractor!! Was oil should I use? Where is the filter? How do I change it?

Most Mower engines have an oil drain plug located at the base of the oil fill tube or dip stick tube, Most mower engines use a standard 30wt engine oil, however, to stay within the parameters of your warranty, use the manufacturers reccommended oil, this info can be located in your owners manuel.

Sounds like a lack of fuel. If it has a briggs motor replace fuel pump diaphram in carb.
