i've tried brand new rechargeable batteries, 1.2 and 1.5 v and the lens continues to retract when powered on.

i'm using the sony battery that came with the DSC S500 and the lens extend and retract when powered on. I've tried using other ni-mh batteries, 1.2 and 1.5 volt batteries and the problem persists. I have another sony cybershot and took the battery out of the dsc s500 and used it in my other cybershot camera without a problem. for me, it's not the battery. the dscs500 was working just a few days ago.

I have essentially the same problem whereby the Sony DSC-S500 refuses to turn on and only very briefly flashes Cyber-Shot on the screen. If I insert strong new Alkaline batteries, the camera turns on fine. But it seems to drain such batteries dead in just a few days even when the camera is turned off and unused. In searching Google, I saw a post somewhere that said this problem could be solved by pressing and holding the on button for something like 60 to 90 seconds. However, I tried this and it has no effect. Sony unquestionably knows that this problem exists, but I haven't seen anywhere that they suggest or provide a solution. This is my first Sony camera, and it makes me not want to buy any more of them or recommend them to anyone else!! Does anyone have Sony's number for digicam Tech Support? Do they have online support available? If so, at what web address? Thanks for your assistance.

I had the same problem, corrected it by cleaning the battery contacts inside the camera.

If the lens can't get into the normal start up position because of a defective lens it will shut down. Expencive to repair bad lens.

I had a similar problem with two different Sony cameras. It would turn on, then right off, even with brand new batteries. My problem was the batteries. I cannot use normal alkaline batteries. I must use re-chargeables only! You might try that. There IS a difference. If you read the batteries closely, the re-chargeables say 1.2 volts vs. 1.5 volts. I also read an article on the differences between alkaline and re-chargeables in digital cameras.

SOURCE: Camera won't turn on...

I got this from the Sony website. I haven't tried it yet. I also have an email in to them.

Follow this procedure to troubleshoot if the power will not turn on.
IMPORTANT: If model-specific information is required to complete any of the steps in this solution, refer to the operating instructions supplied with the product. Manuals are available online in the Manuals/Specs/Warranty section of the Sony® eSupport Web site.

  1. Ensure you are using fresh or fully charged batteries. IMPORTANT: Batteries discharge more quickly when used in cold weather conditions.
  2. Attempt to turn on the camera.
  3. If the issue is not resolved, try replacing or recharging the batteries.
  4. On the camera, move the mode switch to the Playback/Edit mode and attempt to turn on the camera.
  5. If the issue is not resolved, try connecting the AC power adapter (if applicable) to the camera and a working electrical outlet.
  6. Attempt to turn on the camera.
NOTES:
  • Not all cameras are provided with an AC power adapter.
  • If the issue is still not resolved or the camera operates in one mode but not the other, then service will be required.

SOURCE: power on n off

I also had this problem with my DSC-S730. Take the batteries out and hold the power button for 10 seconds. Get new name brand alkaline batteries. Warm them in your hands and insert them properly and close the battery door. Then hold the camera upside down so the batteries make good contact and press the review (>) button.

hey, I had the same problem when I accidentally droped my camera, some parts in the mechanism are probably broken or jammed.

Most likely repairs required.

Lens wont open

Lens mechanism isn't good to work properly so camera shut down the power. Try to tap the lens/ camera while power up.
If you have a memory card in the camera, take it out before turning the camera on

Lens stuck open

I have to agree with one of the comments previously posted. I too had a Sony DCS-S700 and the lens was stuck open. Whenever I turned the camera on, the Sony Cybershot logo appeared and dissappeared, turning the camera off. I noticed the lens was crooked, so I moved it in the center direction and the camera worked again.
