I have a 10 year old Maytag Nepture MDE5500ay with a membrane control panel. When I touch any button on the membrane it immediately indicates a 8.8. on the display. I have unpluged the machine and waited several hours and plugged back in. The minute I plug it back in I get the 8.8. error code. I have had this in the past and it has cleared itself. This time I cannot get it to clear. Help

If you place heating pad over the display, the code will clear and the dryer will work. It may take 10 - 15 minutes. Sounds crazy, but it works for me every time.

The keypad controller has probably developed a short in the membrane of the keypad, it must be replaced in order to get it up and running, but I suggest a maytag repairman to address this.
The 88 in the display most likely means you have a stuck or shorted keypad.
If the control senses a keypad pressed for more than 75 seconds then it will display an 8 error.
There is a membrane/interface test that you can enter and run if you don't mind a little do-it-yourself.
The image below will show you how to enter and run the membrane test.
If you can not enter the test or some keypads are not responsive then you will need to replace the console/membrane. You can obtain the console from this link.

OK F4 is a Shorted wire or Sensor locate short and correct it or replace Sensor Go to the rear of the stove and take the service panel off after disconnecting power. Find the sensor and unplug it. Check for continuity between each terminal and earth/ground/frame. Look for corrosion in the plug. Frigidaire offers a nice video which shows how to check a sensor. Yours is not a Frigidaire but they all work the same. They provide the control with temp data. The oven control (ERC) sends out voltage to the sensor. As temp changes the resistance in the sensor changes. This tells the brain (ERC) temp changes. When the sensor gets shorted or is open (no continuity) then the ERC declares an error and posts it to your control panel. Here is a tip. New sensors sometimes come without the connector. 2 porcelin wire nuts are provided to splice in the new sensor. If you see corrosion on the quick connect. and you cannot clean it but you have continuity to the old sensor and it is not shorted you can bypass the quick connect and make it work in some instances. Just thought I would throw that in.
First unplug the Dryer and allow about 5 mins to pass, this will allow the board time to reset, plug Dryer back in, if problem is still present, its possible that the touch pad is defective on the dryer, if other functions work when touched, it is the touch pad, and not the Board

inside the control panel is a tech sheet that has some diagnostics on it . there is a membrane button test or something to that effect. I suspect that the start/pause button is the problem and you would need to replace the console w/touchpad.about $130-140 new. there are some used ones on ebay.
8.8. indicates a display pad problem. It happens a lot this time of year. The cold weather causes a problem with the keypad, espicially if the machine is in a garage or a basement. One option is to replace the keypad, but a more immediate solution is to place a heating pad over the display panel. After 10 the 15 minutes the pad will warm the display enough so that it will work.
HI. This will be the actual control board in this case, that will be the culprit. the control board, and touch pad, are integrated. These symptoms are indicating that the key pad membrane is damaged. This will require you to replace the entire control board. Once the control is replaced, these issues will be corrected.
Your problem may be the council the part your finger actually touches or it may be the board behind the council. Something is not connecting. Either part will cost well over $100. The warranty is one year parts and labor The Average life of any appliance is 7-10 years. 1-800-688-9900 is customer service. It may be Whirlpool who answers they now own Maytag. Good Luck.
donnson, sounds more like the touch panel shorted or stuck keypads. You can remove the touch panel ribbon from the control board and try to clean it with an eraser. You will need to remove the torx screws and remove the inside panel. See if it comes back to life. Behind the toe-panel on the bottom, there should be a tech sheet showing how to check the key pad. The key pad and control board are warranteed for 5 years on this model, parts only. Catriver..post back.
