I'm guessing the condensor fan motor is not running. they smell like an electrical odor when they stop..remove back cover and see if something has gone into the blade area and stopped the motor from turning. if so, remove it ..if not, spin the blade and see if motor starts..if so, order new can use a floor fan to blow air towards compressor until you get a motor

the fan only controls air circulation. not the function of the motor. sounds like ur fridge is stuck in the defrost mode? check ur cold control thermostat with a multi meter for continuity. the fan does not run while in defrost mode, u can manually check ur defrost timer in the fridge by sticking a small screwdriver into the hole underneath it, and turn clockwise till u hear a click u should hear the fan and compressor come on if not turn 1 more click?

Odd smell when plugged in. smells almost like a lubricant or diaper cream. we've cleaned and bleached everywhere we can. it doesn't smell unless it is running and it is not inside the refrige

in the freezer behind the back inside wall of the freezer there's an evaporator fan motor that could cause this if you were smelling this inside, there's also a condenser fan motor in the back bottom of the machine that blows when it's running, pull out the machine, remove the bottom back panel and check the fan motor to see if any oil is leaking out of the motor.

There is a strong odor coming from the freezer something like a fish smell or a burnt wire. The ice maker is working ok and the fan blows air just fine and the freezer and refrigerator are operating just...

The smell could either be the fan motor or the defrost heating coil...

Cold freezer-motor burned up

I had the same issue, but without the burnt parts.
I couldn't find a reasonable (less than $150) replacement motor from Haier places, but I just took the motor out and took it to an appliance repair center (in North Denver)
They said it was a standard part, charged me around $22 for a new one and I was all set.

For my replacement motor, it was a reversible design, and was initially set to go the wrong way, so I had to reverse it.

RE: sweet smell from refrigerator

Hi Donna53,

I'm Harvey the Master Plumber.

Your question is: You've got a sweet smell (that you think of as a gas smell, but it's not really) coming from your 24 year old Amana refrigerator. It's cooling fine so it's not a gas leak and my husband says freon is usually odorless anyway. You've cleaned it 3 times - once with water and Mr. Clean, once with diluted bleach, and once with a mild solution of vinegar and water. You've even left it off and open with a fan running into it. The smell is still there. The pan under the refrig has been scrubbed too. The smell seems to be coming from the vents in the freezer. At least this seems like where the smell is the strongest. But maybe that's just because of the re-circulating cold air. You're exasperated. Any ideas? It does have any auto ice maker, but that's hooked up to the water main with a filter on it. (filter is clean).

I can think of two reasons for this. The first and most likly is electrical. Look carefully at the components especially the capaciter, it's on or near the motor. If it is leaking or out gassing, replace it. Wire corrosion can cause a wire to slowly give off fumes. Look very carefully i.e. testing meter is helpfull here. I've already expirienced this and it sure was hard to find. Less likely is a freon leak. You won't smell the freon itself but if the oil is a little burnt, that can be smelly indeed. You will need a special leak detector for that. Anyway my money is on the electrical.

Kenmore refrigerator not cooling, fan at bottom not running

  • could be stuck in defrost
  • the defrost timer is in the control panel in the refrigerator
  • look for a small 1/2 inch hole where you can put a flat screwdriver in and turn the dial a little.
  • if it turns on then you know the defrost timer needs to be replaced
  • or
  • look for disconnected wires or burnt wires.
  • could be a bad start switch on the compressor.

is the fan running if so suspect a stuck timer, thermostat (cooling)

if fan doesn't run suspect defective defrost thermostat(some manufacturers wire the fan with them) or a bad defrost element if you see glass chards or burnt smell in freezer section.

thats all i can think of now. hope to se of some help

Burnt smell inside freezer.

Generally speaking it is the refrigerator control that controls the compressor operation. Refrigerator is cooled by air from the freezer. When the refrigerator gets down to its designed temperature it shuts off the compressor. The freezer control determines how much air is allowed to flow into the refrigerator section and there-by controls the freezer temperature.
