Sounds like you have two problems John.
1. Sounds like you could have a faulty motor run capacitor.
2. Sounds like you have a faulty heating coil or thermostats.
If you have a front load machine, remove the front. This will expose the drum and belt, remove the belt and this will expose the drum rollers, idler arm with pulley, and motor. This will allow you to check out the motor.
I hope this helps

broken belt or broken broken belt switch most likely. Open the door. Hold in the door switch and push the start button. Does the drum turn? If it does turn then the broken belt micro switch is where I would look first. If the drum don't turn of course I would replace the broken belt.
The only Kenmore dryer that has a broken belt switch is the 4 wheel drive model. Here is a video which shows how to get into this dryer and replace the belt:

I have an older kenmore gas dyer. as soon as the door is shut it starts running with out pushing the start button, and it doesn't shut off till you open the door . is it the start switch or the timer that...

Good day,
It could be either the push to start switch, or the centrifugal switch on the motor. You would need an ohm meter to check the push to start.
The way the system works, is the power goes first to the door switch, and then the timer.
If the timer is in the on position, it sends power out on TWO wires.
One goes to the push to start switch, which in turn goes to the motor, bypassing the centrifugal switch.
The other power wire goes to the centrifugal switch, and thru it to the same place on the motor, but only if the motor is already up to speed.
That's why it under normal conditions it will continue to run when you release the start switch.
Hope that helps.

Thanks for using FixYa
