The gear lever on the left controls the front derailleur which will have two different size sprockets...when you first start to ride you want it on the smaller of the two. The gear lever on the right controls the back or rear derailleur with a gear cluster of five small to increasing larger sprockets...when first starting to ride you want that on the largest one .....five in the rear and two in the front (5x2=10 variable speeds to chose from). as you increase speed slowly lift up (because this lever will be located down) on the right shifter to help maintain an even speed to help you go faster..when your on the smallest gear in the back and want to go even faster then pull down on the left shifter to go to the larger sprocket you are now in ten gear. When coming to a stop reverse the shift levers and repeat...if the chain rides off the sprockets when shifting especially in the front derailleur it means the shift guide is bent to far to one side or you derailleur needs adjusting same goes for the rear..there are two little screws stops with springs that you use to make these fine adjustments. My family owned a Schwinn shop, i was a mechanic for a good 12 years and i havent heard the name La tour in a long time i owned one myself and have a traveler still today. Tip..keep chain lubed, WD-40 will work fine, and also lube the gear cables with a light grease...also dont rotate the handle bars up for easier comfort because in an emergency stop situation all your weight will transfer to the brake levers and you fly forward over the handle bars.

My schwinn 10 speed bike has us patent with no3477303 how old is my bike please

the patent number for the gears has been around for a very very long time so that number is useless
you have to supply a model or serial number
how much is it worth---only as much as someone is prepared to pay for it

It's no older than November 1969 which is when that patent was issued. There are a number of Schwinn forums where you might be able match other components to get an idea of when your bike was built.

I have a schwinn serial number dp509984. I would like to known what year make and model it is as well as a price range if at all poossible. Thanks for ur help

It would help if you had at least provided the type of bike (old coaster brake, 3 speed, 10 speed, etc.) The make is Schwinn, the model is written right on the bike frame or chainguard. If the bike is repainted so that the model is not visible it's not worth much. As far as year, just Google "Schwinn serial number" (and note info about date codes) and see my tip for more info: How to determine the year value etc of your bicycle

Schwinn bike serial numbers

The Schwinn Super Le Tours were made in Japan from 1976 to 1985. Your serial number "K6" would have been made in November 1976.

LOOKING FOR AN OWNERS MANUAL FOR A 1981 SCHWINN LE TOUR 10 SPEED. THERES GOT TO BE ONE OUT THERE IN CYBER SPACE TO DOWN LOAD.

I wouldn't hold my breath waiting.

What exactly are you needing instructions for? Most bikes are just static frames with a bunch of aftermarket (Shimano, for example) stuff hung on them.

For unique parts use a search engine. There MAY be something out there.

http://www.schwinnbikes.com/support/owners-manuals

Except for proprietary frames or technologies, everything on a common bike is found on just about any other brand of bike and the individual components are usually documented at the individual manufacturers' websites.

Places like http://www.parktool.com/blog/repair-help document many of the repair and adjustment procedures.

Google will find tons of How-to videos for assembly and adjustment.

Old schwinn 10 speed rear wheel removal how

Release rear brake, either will have a lever on brake assembly or remove a brake shoe, shift to the smallest gear in rear, then loosen with a #15 metric box wrench, then push the wheel out. All bikes are metric, not just Schwinn. Then reverse to reinstall.

How do you use the 21 speeds on the Schwinn ladies coaster bike?

there are 7 cogs on the rear wheel hub; three on the crank hub:
7x3=21 gear change possibilities
large gears move the wheel faster and farther around but, with more effort
small gears move the wheel less distance but, with less effort
i.e. 10 teeth divided by 30 teeth= 3:1 per 360 degree rotation of the bicycle wheel

Instructions for using gears on 12 speed Mesa runner

Not familiar with the exact model of bike but normally you start riding in a low gear. As you wish to speed up or find it easy to push the pedals just change up in gear and keep pedaling and the gear chain will move to the next gear cog. The secret is to keep pedaling when you select a gear either up or down and the gear will change. Hope this is of benifit.
