Try adjusting the convergence. If it won't move see below- (or hitting Magic Focus for some Hitachi’s)

This sounds like convergence output IC problem. convergence board would have to be removed - remove and replace 2 STK IC's and check the surrounding resistors. Shops usually charge between $200-$400

Toshiba 42h83 picture all over the place for at least 15-20 minutes. FUZZY WITH VERTICAL AND HOROZONTAL LINES Then works ok

hello!
Looks like you might have loose pins on vertical out put I.C. chip. Take care of the issue sooner, the better! Otherwise, picture will shrink permanently and you end up with big repair job. Vertical output chip attached to silver aluminum heat sink, in the middle of the chassis. You must have some soldering skills and equipment, of course. There are 13 pins at the chip. Flip chassis over and locate the chip. Be careful with wiring. If you unfasten wire clips, you will be able to get to the area, at your bottom. Use sharp tip 30 watt soldering iron. Pins are very close to each other what creates possibility of bridging adjacent pins. Use magnifier or reading glasses to complete the job. another possibility might be in a power supply area, "cold" side. some regulators might have solder joints weakened. Make sure, inspect every part attached to heat sinks. DO NOT TOUCH "hot" side of the power supply. There are charged high capacity electrolytic capacitors. If you start messing around there, quite a chance you will kill main regulator and get zapped badly! Also: slight possibility, that you may find leaked out electrolytic capacitors, which would behave in a similar way. If you see a little "puddle" near the capacitor, means: it's near empty. Most likely around "cold" side of the power supply. Replace those with same value and voltage ratings.
Good luck,
Alex.
