Question about Nikon FE 35mm SLR Camera

2 Answers

Loading batteries I bought am immaculate NIKON FE camera. It did not have batteries in it when I bought it. I looked on line and found the type battery I need. I don't have the manual however and I was wondering how to load the 2 batteries. Do positive sides go in first or negative. I also read you can turn lever on back left top of camera and the light should light up when the batteries are good. Thanks, Don Cooley

Where do the batteries for the FE actually go? I vaguely remember putting in new batteries when I purchased the body several years back, but for the life of me I can't find where they go. My FM2 was easily located in the baseplate, but the FE seems to hiding: Am I going blind, or maybe just missing the obvious? David, Townsville

Most Nikon manual focus cameras I see have the same battery chamber, and their battery loading procedure are exactly the same. Use a coin to unscrew the battery chamber at the buttom, the batteries should be instered into the battery holder (the unscrewed part) , with negative end goes in first. Also refer to the battery insertion direction on the side of the plastic part of the battery holder you will find it :)

Hi Don,

The proper position of the batteries is positive up in the cap. All Nikon bodies are body negative. Handle the batteries by the edges, keep the +/- side clean.

Which battery does the Nikon FE take?

You've got some choice here. You can use two 1.5V A76 or 357 batteries, or one 3V 2L76 battery.

Nikon Fe meter - warm batteries

If the batteries discharged sufficiently to become very warm in just a few seconds then there's an internal short circuit and the internal circuitry has almost certainly been fried beyond repair. To get warm so fast, those batteries will have shoved some significant current through circuitry designed to handle mere milliamps.

Your camera will be repairable using donor spares, but the repair will cost more than buying another fully functional FE especially when you add on the costs of the CLA (Clean, Lubricate, Adjust) service that it will almost certainly need and the likely need for foam light seal replacement. If you buy another FE it will also most likely need a CLA and seal replacement unless there's proof of it being recently done, but at least you won't have the additional costs of buying a donor FE, stripping it for parts and then doing a heart transplant on it.

On balance, yours is best used as a spares donor; you'll get some of what you spent back if you sell it as a spares/repairs example.

Sorry there's no fix, but I hope that you have still found my reply to be of some use. If so, please rate my answer.

Accurate shooter speeds but only couple of picture after develop

I HATE TO SAY THIS BUT I BELIEVE THAT YOU HAVE BEEN SOLD A DAMAGED CAMERA. THIS HAPPENS MANY TIMES ON EBAY WHEN THE DEAL SOUNDS TO GOOD TO PASS UP. FOR ONE THING YOU HAVE A NIKON FE CAMERA, BUT THEN YOU HAVE TWO DIFFERENT MAKE LENSES, BOTH ECONOMY GRADE LENSES, NOT NIKON STANDARD QUALITY. THE PROBLEMS YOU ARE HAVING ARE MOST LIKELY CAUSED FROM A CAMERA THAT HAS BEEN DROPPED. I AM INCLOSING TO HOTLINKS OF NIKON DEALERS THAT DO REPAIR WORK AND GIVE FREE ESTIMATES. YOUR BEST BET IS TO HAVE THIS CAMERA SERVICED BY A NIKON REPAIR SHOP IF YOU PLAN ON KEEPING THE CAMERA. IF YOU JUST BOUGHT IT FROM EBAY, I WOULD FILE A PROTEST STATING THE CAMERA IS BROKEN AND DOESN'T WORK AND DEMAND YOUR MONEY BACK! THEY WILL USUALLY BACK THIS TYPE OF CLAIM. GOOD LUCK! SORRY FOR YOUR MISFORTUNE.

Nikon FE shutter speeds problem

I don't know, but it's worth a try. I took mine to the camera store, because my shutter wouldn't even work anymore, even with fresh batteries in it. He again tried new batteries, and turned the shutter speed knob from Automatic all the way over to "B" for Bulb, and back to the Auto. Guess What! I haven't used the camera in 3-5 years because I thought it was broke and going to need factory repair. Well, this tricked worked for me. I was so thrilled, because my daughter wanted some double exposures and special filters shots for her wedding. Also the weight of the camera I couldn't handle anymore with a health problem, so I went to digital, but would love a Nikon good digital.
Good Luck!

YES, THE PROBABLE CAUSE IS THAT AFTER 25 YEARS OF USE YOUR POOR NIKON PROBABLY JUST NEEDS A GOOD CLEANING! I DON'T THINK IT IS ANYTHING A GOOD CLEANING CAN'T CURE. I HAVE INCLUDED A COUPLE OF SHOPS THAT REPAIR NIKONS AND GIVE FREE ESTIMATES. WHILE I DON'T ENDORSE ANY REPAIR SHOP PERSONNALLY, I PASS THESE ALONG FOR YOUR INFORMATION. I HOPE THIS HELPS. I REALLY BELIEVE THIS WILL TAKE CARE OF YOUR PROBLEMS. ALSO, BY THE WAY, I ALSO HAVE A NIKON FE AND IT'S A GREAT CAMERA. ENJOY!

Nikon FE

TRy firing the camera in the M90 setting. If it fires properly, use the battery test switch. If the battery LED doesn't light up, replace the batteries (2 MS76 type). The FE requires healthy batteries to operate the shutter. If the meter is calling for a slow shutter speed (low light or lens cap still on?). If the batteries are good, but the shutter still won't fire normally in sufficient light, looks like you're in for a repair shop visit.
