Well, win xp is absolutly more fun as OS then win 2000:)
To upgrade to win xp will be no problem since Toshiba have drivers for ir. To upgrade to VISTA will...or can give you problem since there arent any drivers for that Tecra S1.
When booting you laptop notice the Toshiba scree. As that screen displays with the option F2 or F10. With your XP cd in the DVD/CD drive choose F10 and set your boot device to DVD/CD. And follow the onscreen prompts. Hope that helps.
IDE #0 is your disk-drive.
IDE #1 is your CD/DVD drive.
So, take your computer to a qualified technician, to first check that the connectors (power, data) from the motherboard to the CD/DVD drive are good, and then, if necessary, to remove & replace the "dead" drive.
