Question about Audio Players & Recorders
Just got a teac x10r and not sure if its working....the pinch rollers wont move up to the tape....is there a manuel on line for this
If the tape transport doesn't move up on play, but you can push it up and pull it down by hand, the grease on pivots is all dried up. you can take it apart and clean it. replace belt while your at it.

Even if you change the belts be sure to clean the pivot points with 95% isopropol alcohol or buy a smal airplane botle of everclear grain alcohol from the abc, store trust me it is alot easier to find than the iso. alcohol. Then relube with white grease and test, alot of times the belts burn -stretch due to too much resistance at the pivot points from grease that has hardened. And always clean the heads and tape path with the same alcohol.do not use alcohol on the pinch rolers or any other ruber parts it wil mes them up,you can buy specialty cleaner for these,I just use a mild soap detergent and warm water and dry completely before reinstaling.

I have a deck with the same problem. I opened up the deck and found that both of the belts had disintegrated into black, gooey mush.
You should check the belts. They may the source of your problem.

Belts are certainly in need of inspection and if soft or loose then change them. Belts of the right size are getting harder to find all the time. That is why I am ordering items from Marrs Communications and just put those in. More costly than the other way but if you get the wrong belt in there the system will not work correctly. No need to buy any special solution for rubber cleaning- I have used Denatured alcohol from a paint or hardware store for more that 40 years and no pinch roller has ever cracked or decayed from it, Soap and water will keep you scrubbing for hours- I don't have that time to waste as too many units here for repair. I have had NO trouble from the alcohol that I use from Sunnyside called denatured alcohol. We also used the same thing at Teac and Sony Factory Service centers. The rubber cleaner can be used on rubber to recondition it if a path is in the rubber- that was called RC-1 or 2 but it has been learned that the chemical was made for Teac by Rawn company in Wisconsin and that it's composition was mostly Naphtha- which again is available at paint or hardware store. I am currently using those very products in my repair business 6 days a week.

Without physically looking at the cassette deck myself, I cannot be 100% sure the tape is wrapped around the pinch roller and capstan. The capstan is the chrome rod which the rubber pinch roller pushes to regulate the speed of the tape moving across the head. However it is approximately a 90% chance the take up reel for the tape stopped working from a bad tape or a loose belt which drives the tape take up reel. The clicking sounds like it could be the auto reverse solenoid because it thinks the tape has reached the end of play. The fun part is to remove the tape which you may have to disassemble the front panel if you cannot gain access to the tape from the top or bottom. You will need to cut the tape and remove it from the capstan and pinch roller to open the cassette door. Sometimes you can remove the capstan to free the tape. Once you have cleaned all the tape out of the unit make sure the belt for the take-up is good. If it is glazed, cracked, loose or broken order a belt. Clean all the pulleys and capstan and replace the belt. Your unit should be functional after the above procedure.
