Re: no power no light

Hello I just wanted to let you know I have had the same problem and Had to replace the mother board. The computer has been working fine ever since look inside your computer and see if you see a green light on inside on the mother board you should be able to see it on by looking thru the back vents, Check it out, Also so when you plug in the power cord do you hear the fan turn on for a second or two. If not, and you see the green light on the mother board, I would say its the mother board I would also suggest replacing the power supply, Dell will recommend that and I do to. Its about 139.00 dollars for both from Dell. Hope that gets you up and going . bear001

Re: no power no light

Could be either one, or it could be the toggle switch.

Start with the easiest first to check. Unplug the power toggle switch from the mainboard and take a screwdriver or something and short out those two pins to see if it starts the pc. if it does, then your pc case switch is just bad.
If that's not the problem, check the power supply next.

Jumper the ATX 20 pin power cable's green wire to any black, just to make sure the power supply is working. The fans in the power supply will turn on along with anything else hooked up.

To jumper the power supply use a section of wire or a bread twisty (with the insulation removed from the ends) and just connect the green wire to any black wire on the 20 / 24 pin power connector. Make sure that the power switch on the back of the power supply is switched on.

If neither of those seem to be the problem, then most likely it is the motherboard or the processor.

Computer powers up but no signal to mointor and the perphial accessories work but the power button doesnt com on or turn off the power

Unhook everything but the CPU, memory, and video.
Does it start up? Can you see anything on the monitor?
When you were messing around inside the box, you may have accidentally removed the wires from the motherboard that control the power switch and the power light. Check that you haven't done that and if you have, reattach the little plugs to the pins where they belong.
If you don't get anything, the motherboard is probably toast.

Unplug every thing such as the CD/DVD trays, Hard Drive, take out any dial-up modems, network cards, video cards, etc. unplug even the mouse and keyboard. Try powering on agan. If the computer seems to work, then power back off and plug in one device then power on computer. Keep doing that until you find the bad device preventing the computer from turning on.

If that doesnt work then carefully remove the RAM completely then carefully replace the RAM. Now with on the Dynex power supply plugged in to the motherboard, try again. If still nothing, remove the RAM and try again. If it still does the same thing, then the motherboard is dead and needs replaced. If instead you get a series of beeps then the problem MAY be bad RAM. Try different RAM. If that doesnt help. The only thing left is taking out the CMOS battery, It is the coin shaped battery on the motherboard. Take it out and wait 20 seconds then put it back. I doubt it is the CMOS battery, but at this point it is worth a shot.

Yellow light flashes and Fan doesnt start

I think it may be a problem with the motherboard cause the power light should be green from what I remember. The fan isn't even turning on either which is very suspicious. Try another power supply if you have one handy and if that fails then the motherboard is bad. Even if your fan was bad, you would normally get video anyway before a warning message about the fan would come up.

Dell XPS Gen 3 Power Surge - Motherboard dead or power supply?

Thanks for usnig

Most computer power supplys have 3 different voltages coming out of them The motherboard light indicates only that the particular part of the motherboard that uses a particular voltage. The power supply may only be providiing power to that specific part of the computer. I would recommend trying another power supply to determine if that is the resolution.

Please let us know if this solves your problem.

Power failure & dell dimensions 5100 will not turn on

" Is there anything else that I can do before taking to a service person?"

Yes, you can unplug the computer for about one minute, then reconnect the power and attempt to turn it on. Do any of the fans come on? Any beeping from the motherboard? Any lights flash anywhere on the comupter when you do that? Answers to those questions will be helpful to the technician if you do have to take it in for service. If you have a spare power supply around I would try that too before resorting to a service call.
