SOURCE: "Connection failed." -- Serial connection

The "Connection failed" error message indicates a communications problem in the serial port connection between the camera and the computer. Simply put, the computer cannot find the camera it is being asked to connect with. Whenever an external device (digital camera, scanner, Palm Pilot, etc.) is connected to a computer through its serial port, a communications error is possible. There is usually no single "most likely" reason for the conflict -- it could be a hardware issue as easily as it could be a software issue.

SOURCE: "Connection failed" -- USB connection

The "Connection failed" error message indicates a communications problem in the USB connection between the camera and the computer. Simply put, the computer cannot find the camera it is being asked to connect with. There is usually no single "most likely" reason for the conflict -- it could be a hardware issue as easily as it could be a software issue. Fortunately, the most common causes of this error message are also the most easily identified: * Make sure that the computer's operating system is USB compatible. Microsoft Windows 95 and NT operating systems are not compatible with USB technology. (In addition, PhotoMAX and PhotoImpression software cannot be installed on Windows NT systems.) If you have an incompatible operating system, you must upgrade to Windows 98, Me or 2000 to use a USB connection. Your computer must also have the appropriate USB connectors. NOTE: This camera cannot make a USB connection with a computer running Windows XP. * Make sure that the camera power is on. Follow the camera instructions to turn the camera on. Some cameras conserve battery power by turning off automatically after a few minutes of inactivity. If necessary, install new batteries or connect the camera to AC power (if it has an AC power adapter). * Make sure that the camera is correctly set to access images. Make sure the camera is turned on and that its mode dial (if it has one) is correctly set for transferring pictures to the computer. Refer to the camera user guide for more information. * Make sure that the camera cable has not been damaged or become disconnected from the computer. Confirm that both of the connectors are firmly attached. Check the cable for breaks, kinks or other defects, and check the connectors for bent or broken pins. If the cable is broken or kinked, obtain a new cable.

SOURCE: W30 -USB connection

Load the drivers/software from the Sony CD that accompanied the camera and try again. You might also consider a USB connected flash drive "dock" for downloading rather than using the camera. They are not very expensive.

SOURCE: Unable to connect USB hard drive to KD-AVX33

I have a Lacy 160G laptop external HDD attached to it..It works fine... The format of the HDD should also be FAT32. The structure of the files should be Album/MP3

For a HDD that big look for software on the internet which can convert it from NTSF to FAT32 it should work perfectly.

The only thing I haven't been able to get working is videofiles...on the same HDD. Anyone got an idea?

SOURCE: can't connect to usb port

Hi all! I had the exact same problem - the remote recognized the USB connection but my computer (MacBook with Leopard) / Logitech software did not.  I took the advice of  bfuzcsvxvgk  and it worked like a charm.  I wasn't sure what the "Home" folder that he or she referred was, so instead I entered "Logitech" into the Spotlight finder and the Logitech folder came up.  There was only one file (usblancognac.cmd) in the folder and I deleted it. After that I reopened the Harmony Remote software and it opened! THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!  Hope this helps if you are having problems!

Hi! Have owned a sony HC21 camcorder for what seems like forever, have NEVER been able to download the tapes, some type of error, paid a friend to do the "fix", that NEVER worked... so for the...

Sony have a tutorial page to help you do this, at THIS LINK

It may be that you need a different interface on your computer, what Sony call i.Link but everyone else calls Firewire, DV, or IEEE 1394.

This type of camera usually downloads better with a Firewire (DV) connection. Some mini-DV cameras only use the USB connection (if they have one) for stills and can only download video by Firewire. This is because you have to play the tape into the computer, not just copy a file. The way it works on my computer, the camera is controlled by the computer software.

Most PCs have a USB port, but no Firewire port. Macs often have a Firewire port but may not have USB. As most Windows PCs do not come with this interface, you might need to fit an add-on Firewire interface card to the computer's internal expansion bus. This will come with a driver for the card. If you have a MAC, you may already have a port.

Suitable Firewire (DV) cables can easily be found on Amazon or eBay. You will need the kind with a small (four pin) connector at one end and a larger (six pin) connector at the other. My camera came with the correct lead.

Western Digital external USB 2.0 Problem

Buy an External USB 2.0 Hub with the 5.0V power supply. I have a TARGUS 4 Port Hub. MY WD2500XMSB works fine thru the HUB, but will not work using any cable (even the one that came with it) when directly connected to the USB port on my computer. The power consumption of passports sometimes exceeds the .5 milliwat rating for the ports and ccause the port power to interrupt (see USB 2.0 specifications). The external hubs with external power have a higher power output usually an can power the passport drives. CW Rumsey

When i plug in my ipod shuffle to my computer it doesnt recognize it or itunes. can you help?

Are you using a PC and not a Mac?
If so, Shuffle's require a USB2 connection on PCs. Some PCs advertise USB2 ports. However, sometimes the USB port on the front of the machine is actually the slower USB v1. Try connecting your Shuffle to a USB port on the back of the machine. If it works, that's the one you need to always connect to.
