You might be able to use a drive cloning program such as HD Clone from Miray to clone everything to a new drive then do the recovery.

My computer is saying that the system is not fully installed and all I want to do is to resite it to its factory settings

    Which operating system ?????.....
The HP Recovery Partition that comes pre-installed on most new HPs is like built-in insurance if your system becomes unstable or fails.
If the problem is severe enough, you may not be able to start the HP Desktop Recovery Manager from Windows but you can start it manually by following the steps below.

Disconnect all peripheral devices and power on the computer.
Press the F11 key after the computer first powers on to start the HP Recovery Manager.

Follow the on-screen instructions to back up recoverable files on the hard drive to an external drive or media.
Continue following the instructions to recover the hard drive to its original factory condition.
Click "Finish" when the recovery is complete.
Reconnect devices and reboot the computer.
Reinstall software and update Windows and HP to current settings.

Performing an HP System Recovery (Windows Vista)

    HP Pavilion Recovery Partition
Accessing the recovery partition on your HP Pavilion laptop allows you to restore your computer to speed it up, eliminate a virus or repair your Windows operating system.
The Recovery Manager program makes it possible to restore your laptop to its settings as of a previous date or restore your computer to its original factory settings, which will erase all of your installed programs and personal data.
Using the recovery partition allows you to bypass the hassle of keeping track of recovery discs, which could be damaged in storage, rendering them useless when you need them.

Turn on or restart your HP Pavilion laptop.
Press "F11" when the "Press <F11> for recovery" message appears during the HP Pavilion boot process.
Select "Recovery Manager" from your list of recovery options and press "Enter."
The Recovery Manger program will open on your screen, and you can begin the recovery process.
    Access Recovery Manager Within Windows
Click the "Start" icon or "Start" button in the lower left corner of your Windows home screen.
Click "All Programs" and then "Recovery Manager."
Click "Recovery Manager" again to open the Recovery Manager program on your HP Pavilion laptop.

Windows won't start. The computer powers up but windows doesn't start. I thought it might be the hard drive, but it wasn't.

Perhaps it's booting something else, or preoccupied by whatever got loaded while you weren't running an antivirus? Try booting a LiveCD or an antivirus Live USB drive, and seeing if things seem normal from then?

The reason it wont boot from your other hard drive is because windows is expecting some different hardware on *********** bored, gets stumped and falls down.

On your computer there should be a license sticker. This will be rectangular with a green pattern on it. It will have your product key for what ever version of XP you are licensed for. You can place the drive which matches your version in your computer. Then, in order to get that install running on the new board, you will need an OEM copy of the appropriate windows disk. you may have received one with your HP, or talk to your geek friends who may have one.

to repair the load, boot off the cd. You will come to a window where you can press R (dont press R) for recovery console, F3 to quit, and Enter to continue. Then you will see a license. Press F8 to accept it. Then you will see a thingy that says "serching for previous versions of microsoft windows". Then it will show you the partions on the drive. select the OS one, usually marked "C". And there should be an option to press R for repair. Now you can press R. It will ask you for a product key. That is the one on the license on the side of the computer, also known as a COA (Certificate of Authenticicty). It will ask you for some other things too, like user names etc. Then you get to go hunt for drivers on the HP website. Lots of fun.
