Replacing a power switch on a gateway tower

The plastic front of your computer is the Front Panel

Slip this off to access the Power On Button assembly, which has the Power On switch inside it,

Outside view,

Rear View,

-> FOLLOW Anti-Static Procedures -> BEFORE reaching inside, your unplugged from power, computer.
If you do not know, post back in a Comment

Now look at the Rear view of the Front Panel again.

The LEFT Side Panel removes.

Looking at the Rear view of the Front Panel; note that the LEFT side of the Front Panel, is towards the Bottom.

See the three TABS sticking up along this edge?
One at the Bottom, one in the Middle, and one at the Top.

Flat plastic TABS formed out of the Front Panel itself.

Another point of view.......
The metal framework you see that the CD/DVD drive/s are in, is the Optical Drive Bay.

Look at the Optical Drive Bay, and towards the Top/FRONT.
See that flat TAB sticking in from the Front Panel?

Now come down to the Middle of the Front Panel.
See how out at the bottom of the Optical Drive Bay, there is a TAB sticking in from the Front Panel?

See the TAB at the Bottom?

They hook on the metal framework of the computer case.
They go through SLOTS in the metal framework.

The Tabs are pressed to the Inside of the computer case, OR to the outside of the computer case.

This action brings a hooked end on the end of the TAB, to the Middle of the slotted hole it\'s in, and then the Tab is free.

Suggest start with the Bottom TAB, press on it when hooked end is free of slot; then do the same for the Middle TAB.
Now perform this on the Top TAB.

The TABS are pressed to the inside, or to the outside, and pressure is put against them towards the Front Panel.
Push on the Tabs, to push the Front Panel away from the computer case.

Once all three TABS are free, the Front Panel will swing out, and remove.

Power On switch is mounted to this metal case,

I would open that case, and take the Power On switch itself, out.
Then see if I could find a replacement, or one that I could live with,

Direct link to Hardware Reference Guide,

Let\'s see if it works.

If not here is the Gateway Support page for it.

8512041 - Gateway Hardware Reference Guide (5-Bay uATX Case)

Go to Pages 37, and 38. (Top of Adobe Reader in page number box)

DX4300-05 How to open Gateway panels

1) Jaws of Life.

2) Acetylene torch

Gateway Support > DX4300 series of Desktop PC > Main Support page,

Looking at the Front of the computer, is how you determine Right side, and Left side.
The Right side removes with two screws, as far as I can see.

The Left side is a little harder to tell.

Gateway Support is of no help on this one. At least that I have found. Not in User Manual, because it's generic. One size fit's all.

However looking at the Rear View, it looks like the usual style to me.
Hard to make out though, because it's painted Black.

ON the back edge of the Left Side Panel, appears to be a Thumbscrew.
Even with centerline of Power Supply fan.

But there also appears to be a type of flip lock.
Or should state; push over to the inside; a little.

Then using the Fingerpull molded handle on the Left Side Panel, pull the side panel back.

Usually there are Slots in the metal frame, of the computer case.
The side panel has Tabs that stick out, with hooked end.
Along the top, and/or along the bottom.

You pull the side panel back until it stops, then move back forward about an inch, or so. Then bring the side panel straight out.

Then post back what you see, and we'll try to figure it out together.

1) FOLLOW Anti-Static Precautions

Anti-Static Precautions:
Your body carries Static electricity. Static WILL fry out (Short Circuit), the delicate hardware components inside a computer.

Relieve your body of Static electricity BEFORE reaching inside your computer, and BEFORE taking any new parts out of their anti-static bags, or cartons.

Computer on a table, computer Unplugged from power, computer case open;
TOUCH an unpainted surface, of the metal frame of the open computer case.
This action will relieve your body of Static.

IF you leave your computer in the middle of working on it, be SURE to Touch the metal frame again upon your return.

2) Open the computer case;
Click on User Guides in the Gateway link above.

In the list click on -
8513028 - Gateway Hardware Reference Guide

[ This is a PDF file. The computer you are using now has Adobe Reader on it, which uses PDF files.
After you click on the file name it may take up to 30 seconds, before the first page comes up ]

(Note* First page is Black, and blank. Second page is blank, and White)

Hover your mouse cursor on the bottom/middle of the page. The ghosted out navigation guide will appear. Click on the PDF icon all the way to the Right. (Show Adobe Reader Toolbar)

Use the Plus ( + ) icon at the top of the PDF file, to increase the view size.
Click on the Minus ( - ) icon to decrease the view size.

Use the Down Arrow at the top of the PDF file to go to Page 41.
(PDF reader page number. Actual manual page is 35)

Loosen the two Thumbscrews, pull back on the formed fingerpull, and remove the left Side Panel. (Pulls back so far, then tilts out to remove)

[I find it best to remove all cables beforehand, then put a soft cloth on the table, and lay the computer on it's side. Much easier to access hardware components on the motherboard ]

Going back to the main support page, click on Components.
In the list, and under the bold black subheading - Motherboards,
click on -
4006273R - MSI Nvidia MCP73PV Motherboard

The two long White slots shown at the bottom of the motherboard, are PCI expansion slots.

An Ethernet card can be plugged in here.
(PCI Ethernet Card example, {10/100/1000},

Notice above the two long white PCI slots, that there is a longer Black expansion slot.
This is a PCI-Express x16 slot, and is ONLY used for a graphics card.

The small White slot above it is a PCI-Express x1 slot.
It can also be used for an Ethernet Card.
A PCI-Express x1 Ethernet Card,

A closer look at a;
1) PCI expansion slot,

2) PCI-Express x1 expansion slot,

[ Just for reference a PCI-Express x16 expansion slot,

When removing a PCI-Express graphics card, the tab lock on the end is gently depressed ]

Adding or replacing an expansion card, starts at the bottom of Page 54. (PDF file page. Actual manual page is 48)

The metal slot covers at the back of the computer case metal frame, are Expansion Slot Covers.
Remove the one covering the slot you need, by removing it's Philips head screw.

Note that the slots in the metal frame for the expansion cards, does not line up with the expansion slots on the motherboard. They are one over.

Insert the Ethernet Card straight down in the expansion slot, lining up the Locating Notches at the bottom of the Ethernet Card, with the Locating Lugs down in the bottom of the expansion slot.

You also have to slide the 'tang' at the bottom of the Ethernet Card's metal bracket, down into a space in-between the outside metal framework of the computer case.
Plus line up the bracket's locating hole, (half-moon?), with a short dowel in the metal framework.

All of the above will become apparent once you start to install the Ethernet Card.

One last procedure is to Physically push down on each Ram Memory module ('Stick'), and also make sure the Locks at each end, are up, and in place.

Ram Memory gets bumped real easy. Better to check before going on. (Visual inspection will Not do. You have to physically check)

Card plugged in, and fastened down, close the computer case.
Reattach all cables if you disconnected them.
Plug the computer back into power.

Plug the Ethernet cable into the Ethernet Card.
WAIT 1 minute, turn the computer on.

My Gateway GT5404 Freezes

1. your hard drive may be at what is called the "end - of - life"
2. I suggest that you try to backup important files if you can get into the pc screen again.
3. PC freezing is sometimes due to a failing power supply, a failing hard drive, and or a depleted CMOS battery.

Duel Hard drive trouble

Your Os should have the main automatically, keep the other drives as slave unless they are usb then they should auto pick up when you start up your pc for sata drives you got to buy sata connectors and make sure your motherboard has more then just 1 sata connection. After you find out how many you have on your motherboard from bottom to top is 123 so if u have 3 then if you want like if you have a music hard drive and you want it to be first then put it at the bottom 2 and so on.. don't forget to set them as slaves
