Question about Projection Televisions

1 Answer

Convergence on ym television.

My family has had this television for about year and a half now and we got it used from a couple moving. When me and my brother got home today the screen looked borken. It was like there were 3 different screens in 1: 1 red, 1 blue, and 1 green. I figured cuz we had a problem with the same thing on our other TV that it had something to do with the convergence. SO i went to the convergence menu and clicked auto to see if it would fix itself. It did l little but in the middle and to the right the 3 color images are still off. I need to know how i can fix the convergence manually and if theres another way besides buying equiptment to fix the problem.

Re: convergence on ym television.

Sound like to me you still have partial convergence. Autoconvegence is based on values stored when the factory set it up. so what may be done is to converge the set in service mode. a manual process the takes some time. once the convergence is set usally you can store these. then autoconvergence will work. WARNING.. messing with service mode can and will cause worse problems. so i dont recomend it to a non technician

No problems just a few questions

Dave, hours on the parts = wear on the parts, especially the tubes and the convergence circuit, as for preventive maintenance that you can provide I`d say the only thing you should do is blow out the dust once or twice a year with an air compressor or a couple of cans of compressed air. I see 50 sets a year (all broken of course) with a half inch of junk sitting on top of all the parts which severely overheats everything, good for me but bad for the customers wallet if you get my meaning, video-tek

I have a blue wave on my screen

Your TV has a convergence problem. Here are some of the most common symptoms.

Screen looks 3D
One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
Screen is bowed in or warped.

Here is a quick test....

Using your original remote go-to the tv settings then goto the convergence or magic focus section.

Try to adjust the convergence.

You should be able to move them up, down, left, and right.

If you can't move them in all directions your convergence chips are bad and should be replaced. This is a common problem.

Its a fairly easy fix on the Hitachi sets.

You can get a repair kit that includes all the parts from The kit includes a photo instruction guide, original Sanyo STK chips, convergence resistors, etc.
Everything you need to fix it yourself.

Half the picture is good, other half is off center

Your TV most likely has one or more possible problems.

Problem #1: Convergence Chip Failure ( common problem )

Here are some of the most common symptoms and example photos of a convergence problem
  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.
Here is a quick test....

Using your original remote go-to the tv settings then goto the convergence section.

Try to adjust the red and then the blue convergence.

You should be able to move them up, down, left, and right.

If you can't move them in all directions your convergence chips are bad and should be replaced. This is a common problem.

You need to replace the convergence chips and convergence resistors. Check the site They have put together a kits for most models. If you don't see a kit for your set send them a quick note and they will put one together for you. Their kits include a photo instruction guide, original OEM Sanyo STK chips, convergence resistors, pico fuses, etc.

Problem #2 CRT Fluid is Cloudy

Projection TV tubes have a liquid coolant that is used to keep them from overheating. After many years the coolant in the blue and green tubes will become cloudy and cause the screen to look dull, red/orange, etc. You may even see halos around images.

Picture of a set that needs the fluid changed.

What you will need to do is replace the coolant and clean the crt. You can get a repair kit from that includes replacement coolant, photos. instructions, etc.

Convergence issue

try fixing the convergence 2 after your've aligned the convergence 1 - the second (accessed via the set up control) let's you adjust on 9 different axis to align the red and blue tubes to the green. you select which + sign you want to adust by pressing the corresponding number for the + ie 1 for the top left, and 9 for the lower right corner.

good luck (note - you cant change the green only the red and blue, if the whole edge is a mess try moving the image (you need to be in zoom mode, and then access the position adjustment via the pitcure set up screen.

Bottom half/ color separation and distortion of image/top half normal.

Sounds like you need to go into the setup and do convergence. Be careful if you place any speakers or devices that have magnets in them such as a vaccuum cleaner. Even just moving the television can make the convergence go out temporarily. There is a auto circuit that should take care of this if it is moved.

If you have no magnets etc close, then I would check the convergence.

Mits 55908 Convergence problem

Good Day, John;
It sounds like the Convergence IC's have poor solder connections, by re-soldering the convergence output IC's should solve your problem. The IC's are large and mounted to large silver "heat sink" with STK 392 # on them. Good Luck, big IRISH.

Horizontal Curvature with convergence problem

DA, convergence circuit has failed, the IC`s and possibly a couple of support resistors need to be replaced, your right about it being a good set, 6 years is about average for convergence IC`s, call your local shops for a few estimates and get it fixed, it will run for a lot longer than 6 years, hope this is the advice your looking for, e-mail me if you have more questions, BMW Rider

Toshiba 56H80 Convergence Problem?

There are 2 large IC's in your set and one of them has burned out. These are called convergence output IC's and are usually the STK392-010's. A good idea would be to go ahead and replace both with the newer, upgraded STK392-150 IC's. A good tech can change those IC's in about an hour and a half, and when I do a housecall for a set like that I charge $150, but shops in your area will vary so be sure to ask around.

The convergence circuit needs repaired. I did the same job yesterday on this model. I not only replaced the convergence ICs, but, I had to replace a couple of resistors and a coil. The convergence alignment was minor after that.

Green projector alignment

convergence IC'c have three amps inside them. The green is fixed but still has convergence correction . Each IC uses the extra channel for the green. So if you are not a tech ask the repair person how much it will cost to replace both IC's. Remeber a TV set is not a place for an experimenter or a handi person, unless you want to get seriously killed!! Good Luck
