If you're using a 64-bit edition of Windows (at least Win7 or Win8), then you cannot use Epson's software for this scanner.

But you *might* be able to use the open-source TWAIN alternative, known as SANE. See for info.

I DO KNOW that you can use VueScan with this scanner in the 64-bit edition of Windows 7. That's what I use, and I plan to buy it myself when I can afford it, but in the meantime (for things like documentation for my food stamp application:-(, I'm using the demo edition in a way that avoids the ugly 'Buy VueScan!' watermark (or nag-mark).

VueScan costs $40 for basic and $80 for full program, but the $80 edition includes lifetime updates. Or if you're super-cheap like me, and only need occasional scans of documents, you can use the VueScan trial edition -- and avoid watermarks -- by using the advanced settings to access the PREVIEW resolution setting, which you can then increase to 400ppi or so. After that, click the Preview button, not the Scan button. Then use a screen capture program (like Mouser's donation-ware Screenshot Captor) to capture an image of the preview (choose the capture-selected-region option).
And, if you click the VueScan button to rotate your preview 45 degrees, before you do the screenshot, the preview image will be much clearer -- otherwise it is purposely blurred just a bit to, I think, defeat this approach. BUT please, please note that I am serious about buying VueScan, and I hope anyone who uses this trick does so temporarily until they can buy VueScan too. :-)

Just bought it at thrift shop, new never used, no instructions, How do I use? can I use it on any scanner?

No these only fit on epson scanners due to the specific plug on the attached need and epson most models from 1200 series,1600 or 2400 series or 3600 will accept the transparency adapter.i have an old 1640 series that has one of these can source a cheap scanner off eBay and download the drivers off epson site.then attach the scanner AFTER you install the software and it will find the scanner and connect to computer.Epson do provide a good scanning program as part of the will need to choose negative or positive to scan.higher spec scanners have built in transparency hoods and can scan at higher resolutions.quite honestly if you are okay with say 6x4 inch prints a basic scanner is fine if it scans at least 2400 dpi.

The inside of the glass needs to be cleaned. How

The 3170 has a screw in each of the two slots where the lid inserts into the scanner. Remove the lid, remove these screws, and then the top portion of the scanner with the glass slides forward and off. Mine was stiff getting it off, but with some slight twisting and a bit of force it came off. You can then clean the glass.

Scanner not responding to preview scan

Try this as a last ditch effort. Remove the software. Reboot the computer and come off line. Disable the Anti Virus program. Now install the soft ware. Then try. If the red light still flashes then assume it is new scanner time.
