Lock the shaft at the back of the motor and spin the impeller off counter-clockwise.

Hayward super pump won't prime

Priming issues are almost always due to a bad gasket or loose fitting.
  1. Remove the leaf trap lid. Examine the gasket for debris, cuts or folds that might prevent a tight seal.
  2. Remove and examine the winter plugs for proper seal.
  3. Remove, re-tape or putty the threaded fitting directly in from of the pump.
  4. Check all unions, fittings and connections from the skimmer and main drain to the pump.
  5. On rare occasions the impeller may be impacted with debris preventing water flow. Remove the four screws holding the motor to the wet end exposing the impeller and examine it. Hayward impellers are also know to break at the shaft. This will sound like the pump is operating but never pumping water.
  6. If everything looks normal, try pouring water over the entire wet end while priming. This will sometimes allow water to fill a void you missed. The pump will probably loose prime again until the issue is corrected.

Hayward pool pumps

The impeller on this Hayward pump unthreads counter clockwise.
Take a big flat head screw driver and put it on the center shaft on the back of the motor to hold the shaft solid while you unthread the impeller.

My pump and filter has been working perfectly, even thruout rain storms. Today, It is raining heavily in central NJ and The motor is rumming, but no flow from the return. As if a connection o is broken...

Try to prime the pump!!! Also, if you have a system that used diatomaceous earth, may need to clean and add??? Last resort after checking for flow problems, filter and prime is to open the pump and check the impeller.. Good luck...

Frozen impeller. What is the proper repair or does the impeller need to be replaced

NOT ALL THE TIME THERE IS TWO TYPES, ONE HAS BRASS THREADS THE OTHER IS ALL PLASTIC, WHEN YOU UN-SCREW (LEFT) HOLD SHAFT AT BACK OF MOTOR WITH 7/16 WRENCH, PLASTIC IMPELLERS ON THE SMALL MOTORS CAN BE REUSED . BUT ON A 1.5 AND BIGGER.IT'S A MUST TO REPLACE IT WITH THE BRASS THREADED IMPELLER. I THINK YOU WILL FIND THAT THE MOTORS ROTOR IS LOCKED UP AND WILL NEED TO BE REBUILT, YOU MAY BE ABLE TO ROCK THE IMPELLER, AND WITH SOME LUCK FREE THE MOTOR.. GOOD LUCK, AND PRIME THAT PUMP AFTER ANY PUMP REPAIR !!.. JAY THE POOL PUMP REPAIR GUY IN LONGWOOD FLORIDA..

Ihave a hayward 1hp inground pool pump and can not get the impellar off

you will need to hold the motor shaft at the back of the motor with either a 7/16 open end wrench, or either armature tool. You can then use a closed face impeller wrench to remove it. Make sure if there is a screw in the center of the impeller to remove it by turning clockwise.
