SOURCE: Panasonic dmr ez25 no read error
Try removing the cover and clean the glass laser eye with rubbing alcohol and a cotton swab. Clean the glass laser eye.
If cleaning doesn't work, then the circuit will need to be replaced.

How old is the unit? Have you tried unplugging it for a half hour and restarting the machine? This can be caused by many things this U81 error literally means 'Microprocessor Communication Error on the Universal asynchronous receiver/transmitter'
I would make sure the unit is in a well ventilated area. I would also contact panasonic if the problem persists and see what they can do as far as repairing/replacing the unit at little or no cost to you. I can get you their contact info if you give me your general location.

To my knowledge and on most Panasonic UK/Euro models/versions, error code "U81" indicates glitch in the firmware, specifically, on its initial diagnostic mode, the system could not detect "Freeview" signals. The concern might have been caused by the absence of an incoming TV signal. Should this hold true, I then suspect that there is nothing wrong with the Panasonic unit but rather the Freeview service in your location or configuration/settings of the provider signals or the tuner.
Let me know,if needed further assistance.
Hope i helped you.
Thanks for using ' Fixya ' and have a nice day!!

Tips for a great answer:

Check that C1801 is not leaky. If so, check if IC1801 has blown. If it has blown, it will also need to be replaced.
Usually it's only C1801 leaky, replace it and thats it.
You can find the capacitor on the main board, under the digital board that has ribbon cables going to the dvd drive.
Hope this helps.
