Question about IBM ThinkPad T30 2366 Notebook

1 Answer

Display + Startup

Hi! This is John. I'm using Thinkpad T30 2367. Earlier I multi colored horizontal lines on my screen with slight flickering. Slowly it worsened even more leaving my screen with no display at all except the colored lines. After that I stopped using it regulary. Anyhow I managed to open the LCD assembly to adjust the connection of Video Data Cable correctly to get a crystal clear picture to transfer some files. One day I planned to troubleshoot it on my own & tried to disassemble the unit while it was pugeed in. the moment I disconnected the connection between the LCD & the inverter, everything went off. I tried reconnecting the inverter as it was but still no results. Right now the contidion is that the unit is showing no signs of being alive. Even if I connect it to external power supply it will not show up a single LED or any indication of being in working condition. My unit is out of warranty & I am on a time crunch since I have a project to complete.
Please suggest me something.

You probably shorted something out on the motherboard when you unplugged the inverter. The machine would have to be disassembled and the system board traced for power problems.
If you have it repaired make sure it goes to a shop that does "component level" repairs to mainboards.

If you are not ready to spend $100-$200 fixing it then I would replace the machine. In the meantime you may want to buy a external USB hard drive box so you can plug in your hard drive to another machine.

here is a link to an enclosure that would work:

hope this helps!

Vertical strip of flashing horizontal lines on Acer Aspire 7551G screen

More than likely it's the lcd screen and will have to be replaced. I could be the video card, but most likely the lcd screen especially when you can put pressure on the screen and cause changes. To isolate the problem try connecting another monitor to the computer. Borrow a monitor from a neighbor, friend, relative or co-worker and connect it to the laptop. If the Borrowed monitor displays ok, then the problem is with your lcd screen and the video card is ok. If the Borrowed monitor displays the same as your lcd screen then the problem is with your video card inside the computer.

Plug in an external monitor and see if the display shows up on it. It can be any kind of monitor even the old big fat crt monitors as long as it has a vga cable to connect to your computer's vga port. If so that proves your video card is ok. The video will show on most systems when you reboot without you having to do anything. Some systems will require you to hit the FN (Function key) + F1 thru F12. Hold down the FN key then hit the correct key for displaying on the monitor (F1 thru F12). The correct key will normally have CRT/LCD on it or it will have the icon of a display.

Once you narrow it down to the lcd screen as being the problem you might try taking the lcd screen apart to reseat the lcd cable on the back at the top of the lcd. Just unplug it and plug it back into the connector. You can also try doing the same where the lcd cable plugs into the motherboard. Just pull it out and put it back.

When it flickers, can you still see the text when the screen goes dark?
May have to use a bright flashlight set right on the display to see
the text on the screen beside where the light sits.
That will tell you if it's the backlight.

You can also look at a grazing angle into one of the edges to see if the
backlight is flickering when the display does.
When it's cold, does it start with a slight pinkish color? That can be
a sign of backlight going bad.
Anything interesting happen when you flex the cable by moving the screen?

I'm not saying it's impossible, but I've never seen software cause
consistent screen flicker. And if the vga port doesn't flicker, sw is
even less likely the problem.

If you bet the odds, you'd bet on a bad display cable.
Won't hurt to try replugging it.

If that doesn't help, then your monitor may be dying....

Hi, now you could be having one of two problems the first thing and easiest option is to scan for viruses and such like as this is often the cause of any display problems the second and more expensive problem is going to be that the lcd screen will need replacing or you may have a fault on the video board part inside the laptop both of these repairs will need to be done by a computer repair shop.
Check if you have any warranty left as these repairs are not cheap.

Let me know how you get on or if you need further assistance ok

Flickering multi-colored line in the middle of the screen.

You have a failure in the vertical deflection circuit. This could be either a bad vertical chip, the power supply that runs the chip or a bad capacitor in that circuit. This is usually a repair best left to a professional. There is a small possibility that it could be bad solder connections. If genlty tapping the unit temporarily solves the issue you can try and resolder the pins on the vertical chip LA7841 is the part number. There is also a resistor 1 ohm 1 watt. If that resistor is open you can assume the IC is bad
