Toshiba Satellite M30 - Power Problems only boots when in vertical position

This laptop will not power up when it is placed normally in horizontal position. However when the laptop is placed vertically it will run perfectly. Usually if i move the laptop the computer shuts off power instantly or has a blue screen of death.
What should i do, i am certain the problem is electrical in nature. Does the laptop require insulation or shielding in certain spots. Any suggestions?
Using a electronics lab microscope i could not find any signs of cracks or bad solder joints. All IC chips on the motherboard are good, all traces seem to be fine, no scratches either. Is something causing the motherboard to short out?

I have shown this problem to a tech and he told me that its possible that the motherboard might have a crack in it which is causing this problem.

Here's a link to a youtube video that i posted that shows what happens:

This is not a Power Jack problem since it occurs when using batter power as well.

I just fixed it myself! I opened up the laptop, took out the motherboard put in a small folded up piece of cardboard beneath a spot that looked like it need support. Plus in that same spot of the motherboard, everytime i bent it, the machine would boot, and everytime i let go, it would power off. The motherboard now sits on top of the piece of cardboard and is slightly bent upwards as it rest on the chassis bolted down by screws. I looks like all it needed was some strain after all, all this time i thought putting strain on motherboard was always a bad idea, but in desperate situations its worth trying in moderation, its been working 24/7. I did a full stress test today and installed Vista.

I bet this could have been avoided if Toshiba designed the chassis properly in the first place.

    Problem solved

Stick a piece of carboard just beneath the motherboard, just enough to support it and to bend it upwards slightly.

This was not a shielding problem.

all the laptop needed was an adequate standoff on the chassis. Plus the motherboard needed some upwards strain so i placed cardboard beneath it to bend it upwards. It was actually caved in because it had no standoff what so ever in one spot.

I had the same problem. The cardboard or some type of pressure material will fix it. 100% resolved. After 4 years of intense and almost 24h work, it is fair to have a problem... But in every shop i went they tried to replace the motherboard...

These are known to have a grounding problem between the speakers and mainboard - They were actually sued and eventually settled to extend the warranty. unfortunately the special extenstion program ended a few months ago and toshiba no longer will fix this. The workaround is to add shielding to it.

See this link about it:

http://www.laptoprepair101.com/laptop/2006/04/06/satellite-m35x-a70-a75-lockup-freezes-reboots/

If that doesnt fix the problem then you may have motherboard problems and at that point it would be best to part this laptop out and replace it.

My laptop charger is not working

Two possible causes:

1)your laptop charger is dead or malfunction

2)your laptop dc jack is loose or malfunction

If you need to turn around your charger at one position so that the laptop will charge, that means your dc jack is dead. Otherwise your laptop ac adapter should be replaced.

If you need to purchase a new toshiba charger, you may click the following link to take a look at Toshiba Satellite M30 AC Adapter:

CRAQUER MOT DE PASS BIOS TOSHIBA SATELLITE M30 MERCI

To reset the BIOS password read the information from this link.

In case of your Toshiba laptop the easiest method would be using software from Hiren's Boot CD as it's pretty hard to open it up and reach for the CMOS battery or the jumper and I wouldn't recommend doing it especially if it's under warranty.

Power on password for toshiba satellite m30-107

You can by shorting the CMOS/BIOS battery connector for 30 sec's with a resister pack (2.4 KOhms), but if you don't have any PC repair experience, don't try it!

"You can blow the motherboard if you get it wrong.."

I suggest you take it to a Toshiba repair shop, it will cost about $100 to have them do it for you.
