Question about Cherokee FR-465 (14 Channels) 2-Way Radio

Open Question

The plastic case on my two Cherokee FR-465 radios seem to be undergoing a chemical decomposition (breakdown) and are becoming so sticky that they are impossible to handle and use. Is there some remedy for this or does the manufacturer replace them. I am unable to locate Wireless Marketing Corp which was started by a former Cobra exec.

Radio case perished and sticky

Depends on what the product is. Alcohol works on a lot of products . So does plain water if it cuts the sticky substance.

The outside of My unit has become sticky and has an odd aroma. I think the chemical component coating is changing. I have included a picture Ser# CE0389 Respectfully, ken henson

Try applying the solution for sticky old Tupperware . Rub with a rag or paper towel moistened with household ammonia until the sticky surface is no longer sticky. Worked like a charm on my sticky Bushnell binoculars (and on Tupperware). .They were unusable before treatment. I suspect plasticizer migration.

The exterior surface of my DVD PDM-0082 has become sticky and the color (red) will wipe off on clothing. How do I fix this problem?

It sounds as though someone used a harsh chemical on the case that is not compatible with the finish. This will soften the plastic and cause the issue you state. Once this has occurred, there is no getting the genie back into the bottle.

Help please - my E1 has had new chip fitted to sort the display problems and that seems fine now (at extra cost!) my problem is the sticky rubberized finish is starting to break up and looks and feels...

One owner on eham.com remarked that he soaked the cabinet in rubbing alcohol, after opening the unit and removing the pc boards. Whatever chemical is effective I believe the lettering would be destroyed.

My Tivoli Pal radio casing has a sticky feel on it, everywhere...how does one clean this or make it non - sticky

Just cleaned mine this morning because it was so ridiculously sticky and dirty with great success with nail polish remover and cotton pads. Read this solution posted elsewhere but was worried about ruining the finish, and there are warnings on the bottle about not using it on plastics......but tried a bit on the back. Went very well and with a load of pads and alot of scrubbing, it came completely clean! No sticky residue left, no discolouration. Looks brand new!

My black Tivoli Songbook case has become completely sticky. I have only ever used a bit of water and a cotton cloth, what can I do or clean it with? thanks Jodi

Hi Jodi:
Same with both of mine. I used solution of vinegar and water, about 50/50. It seems the "rubbery" texture is now gone, but the terrible sticky is gone also. The solution did not remove any of the lettering or numbers.

No audio but transmits ok

Hello dgbuhl,

Check the Continuous Tone Coded Squelch (CTCSS) settings on all the radios. (Note that some manufacturers refer to this feature as a Privacy Code or Quiet Code. The actual name of the feature may vary.)

In order for your radios to communicate with eachother all of the radios need to be on the same channel and have the same CTCSS / Privacy Code programmed (or the CTCSS feature must be disabled on all the radios). If CTCSS is enabled on one of the radios, but not the other, the situation you describe would occur.
Check your user's manual for more information on the Privacy Tones and how to set them.

Best Regards,
Ken
