thank you for the quick reply cncfixer.
I opened the front of the dispenser and found the plastic hole that holds the pin that goes thru the dispenser arm and has the spring ...is broken on one end. Hence the pin cannot hold the spring/dispenser arm securely in place.

It appears that the plastic that held the arm/spring is molded into the whole housing.

What is the part number I need to fix this?

    Thanks

Okay. Further research shows that the part I need is PN 981827.
This shows as no longer available.

Where can I get this part .... or a repair solution?

    Thanks

Final. Contacted several people at Whirlpool. All were polite and cheerful. None very helpful. Their only solution is that since the part is no longer available, replace the entire freezer door. Cost approximately 600 dollars including shipping and tax. It costs more because it is the Stainless Steel model.

This is because a small piece of plastic, the size of a fingernail clipping, broke off. It held the dispenser arm, door and spring to the plastic door insert.

Look up 'cheap production' in the dictionary and you will see a picture of this device. This is made all the worse by Whirlpools lack of satisfactory customer service.

I have fixed the non-closing flap with a paperclip, a dab of J B Quik and ingenuity. Cost: <50 cents. No thanks to Whirlpool!!!

On the back of the door directly behind the flapper door , you will see an access cover ... take it off and adjust the tension

Bottom of ice dispencer freezes and wont let ice come out. It is a whirlpool side by side

Check the door flap on the freezer door , which opens to let the ice come thru . If this flap does not close completely , then it will let frost accumulate inside the ice bin , blocking ice from dispensing . If you had given the model number , I would give the part number for the door kit .

Frost buildup inside freezer door at ice dispenser

you are still not getting a seal on that flap. It sounds as if it may be warped. THe reason the frost and ice is building up is due to the flap not sealing there isn't any other reson for your problem. Good luck on your repairs

The ice dispenser rubber door or seal does not close allowing warm air back into the freezer and causing frost buildup. How difficult is that rubber seal to replace.

Remove the top freezer hinge cover and disconnect the plug there . This will remove power to the door . At the bottom of the dispenser cover , but inside the dispensing area , between the grill and the cover , insert a small screwdriver about 1 " in on both sides , and push down and inward , forcing the bottom of the cover outward . Do this carefully , due to plastic tabs on the dispenser cover . After bottom is loose , lift upward , to release the top plastic slots of the cover . Disconnect the plug on the cover . Remove the 2 screws holding the dispenser housing , and slide forward . You should now be able to see the door flap , return spring and pin . You will have to see which part(s) are needed or what the situation is . Maybe pin slid out , maybe the clear plastic ice guide , connected to the dispenser activator arm , broke loose , obstructing the closure of the door flap . Come back with your findings and a model number , and myself or another expert , will be glad to give you part numbers .

Frost builds up in dispenser area .hard to open because of frost buildup.

The ice dispensor flap is not closing completely , causing the frost in the inside shoot and on the bottom of the dispensor . Sometimes caused by a broken ice guide ( clear piece attached to the arm that activates the dispensor on the door ) it hits against the flap , not letting it close . Model number would have helped more .

Frost buildup on area where ice comes out of the ice bin with frost also on the inside of door chute

The flap door where ice is dispensed is warped letting warm air into the freezer causing the frost build up. You must replace the flapper - a $5 - $7 part but not too difficult to replace. I find the flapper last only about 2 years and frost problem reappears. Forget about a "weak heater".

Ice maker chute icing up

The flap is probably not closing properly. Dispense some ice, then open the freezer door and look to see if the flap is still slightly open. If so, you will have to take the front cover off of the control panel and clean the muck off of the flap mechanism and also clean the solenoid. I have to do this about 2X year. Not a big job, but be careful.

Frost buildup in ice-dispenser tube

Open the freezer door and look down the ice chute while you shine a flashlite up the dispenser cute from the outside. If you see light around the chute door, it needs to be replaced. The problem you describe is almost always air laekage around that flap. Post back if you need more help.
