Question about Microsoft Outlook Express

Cannot open Outlook Express after compacting the files...

The error messages contain what I have stated below.. "Outlook express could not be started. The application could not open the message store. 0x800C013B" Then followed by: "Outlook express could not be started because MSOE.DLL could not be initalised".. this occurred after it had done a compacting of the folders.. Any ideas. I have tried RegGenie, and this has not worked..

Thanks Everyone.. I fixed it with ther help of a great person.. DONT BUY THE PROGRAMS THAT CLAIM TO FIX ... All I did was the following:
Rename the Folders.dbx file:

  1. Click Start, point to Search, and then click Files or Folders.
  2. In the File name etc type, type folders.dbx.
  3. In the Look In box, click your primary hard disk (usually drive C), and then click Search.
  4. Right-click the identified Folders.dbx file or files, and then click Rename.
  5. Type folders.old, and then click OK.
  6. Start Outlook Express. This creates a new Folders.dbx file automatically.
Just change .dbx to .old That is all that was required.. RENAME!!! Not buying programs that dont work...

When I opened it the folders were a little messy.. but that is fine when you consider I felt that I had lost the program and all Emails stored. Problem only occurred after a suggested compacting of emails by the program.

RegGenie DID NOT FIX
Errorwiz DID NOT FIX

Corrupt Outlook Express 6 .DBX File

1) Identify all the .DBX files (folders) that you are going to restore but which do not exist yet on the new machine. This list of files would only include folders that you have created yourself and would not include folders like inbox, outbox, etc.
2) Start Outlook Express and create a new folder for each one you identified in (1).
3) For each new folder you have created you *must* highlight it - select it with your mouse as if you were going to see what is inside it. We know it is empty, but Outlook Express will not create the .dbx file until you do this. [Thanks to Ethan and "Biggles" separately for their input]
4) Close Outlook Express. Now you will see that your Outlook Express installation will have a .DBX file for every folder you are about to restore.
5) Now restore the .DBX files - that is you replace the empty dbx files created in 2 and 3 with the files from your backup.
6) If you restored from CD it may be that the read attribute on the files has been set. In this case you will need to ensure that the read attribute is cleared for each file you restored (right-click on the file and choose "Properties"). [Contributed by Aaron Kuhn]
7) If all is well, when you open Outlook Express now you will get all your restored messages.
If you receive a message in your message body window "cannot display folder, you may be out of memory or disk space" after restoring, then it is likely you missed step 6. Go back and ensure your DBX files are NOT set to Read-Only.

WHY DOES OUTLOOK EXPRESS INSIST ON COMPACTING FOLDERS WHEN WE CLOSE IT ?


OE has a long and troubled history with compacting folders. In the most current version, OE compacts all folders automatically after you open and close the program 100 times. Compacting folders is absolutely essential for maintaining your files in good working order. Therefore,
Do not interrupt the process once it has begun
It is best not to use your computer at all until the process is complete, which can take a few minutes.
Under no circumstances must you ever use Task Manager to kill the msimn.exe process, or put your computer on Standby, or turn off the power, or use a memory-intensive program while compaction is occurring. Any of those can cause destruction of your files and the loss of your messages.
If you don't like waiting for that 100th closing, you can compact all folders manually at any time. For best results always use this procedure.
1: On the File menu, click Work Offline so that no new messages will be arriving
2: In the Folder list, click on Outlook Express so that no e-mail or news folder is open.
3: Close the Folder list by clicking the X in the upper right-hand corner of the list panel. Alternatively you can click Layout on the View menu, and then clear the checkbox for "Folder List”.
4: On the File menu, point to Folder, and then click Compact All Folders. Do not use your computer until the process is complete, which might take several minutes.
5: If an error occurs, close Outlook Express, re-open it, and begin the process again from the top. If the same error occurs again, close Outlook Express, restart your computer (or log off and then log on again), open Outlook Express and then begin the whole process again.
Unfortunately that does not reset the internal counter to zero, so OE will still compact after the 100th closing You can edit the registry manually to reset the counter, or you can use OE TOOL to compact all folders and reset the counter at the same time. To reset it manually
1: Close Outlook Express and all message windows.
2: Click Start, click Run and type without quotes "regedit".
3: Navigate to this key
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Identities\{GUID}\Software\Microsoft\Outlook Express\5.0
where GUID is the long number used for your Identity
4: In the right-hand pane, double-click "Compact Check Count", then change the value to zero(0).

When messages are deleted in Outlook Express, they are not actually removed from the database containing your email data. Rather, the messages are marked to let Outlook Express know that they can be removed the next time the database is compacted. Compacting the message store is necessary for Outlook Express to maintain a reasonable database and avoid file corruption. Because it is necessary, Outlook Express offers to compact your message store every 100 times the program is used. If you do not compact your message store, the message will continue appearing. Compact the Outlook Express message store manually to remove the message asking if you would like your message store compacted automatically.
Compact the Outlook Express Message Store Manually Launch Outlook Express. Click "File," then click "Work Offline." This disconnects Outlook Express from the Internet temporarily, ensuring that the message store is not in use while you are compacting the database. Note: If you do not want to compact the Outlook Express message store at all, see Section 2. Click "Tools" and then "Options." Click the "Maintenance" tab. Click the "Clean Up Now" button. Click the "Compact" button. This process may take some time depending on when the message store was last compacted. Click "Close" or "OK" to close each window. The offer to compact the Outlook Express message store automatically will no longer be displayed. Click "File" and "Work Offline" to reconnect Outlook Express to the Internet. Not receiving or sending at start in outlook express


To fix this issue you can follow the
below mentioned workaround :



- Check your Internet and Outlook
Express account settings and double check that you have entered the
correct password and user name.


- Check your Firewall and Anti-virus
settings as sometimes this blocks the sending and receiving of
messages.


- Check if there is a corrupt
message stuck in your Outbox.

- A corrupt Outlook express dbx file
may also cause this issue so it is required to go for solution.

I cannot open dbx files


Hi,
If you cannot open the .dbx file, you need to have Outlook Express installed on your computer. Usually outlook Express is the default email client for Windows XP. http://www.dbxconverter.com/ you can try to use this link to get teh converter of .dbx files to .pst files that you can use and read using Microsoft Outlook (Third Party) or Windows Mail (default for Vista) Windows Live Mail(Windows 7).

How to disable Outlook Express 6 Compact message prompt


Unfortunately, there is no easy way to disable this. The best you can do is delay the messages, or avoid them altogether. I have listed both methods below, and would suggest number 1 over number 2:

Method #1 - In Outlook Express, click on Tools>>Options>>Maintenance. Click on the Cleanup Now button, and then Compact. Doing this regularly will keep you from getting the messages.

Method #2 -
  • Open the registry (click on Start, Run, type Regedit and click Enter).
  • Browse to HKEY_CURRENT_USERIdentitiesyour identitySoftwareMicrosoftOutlook Express.0.
  • Look for the registry value titled Compact Check Count. This typically has a value of between 1 and 5, which means Outlook Express will check every 1 to 5 times to see whether you need to compact. Double click on the item, and set the number to 100, so you will only see the message every 100 times you open Outlook Express.

Please follow the simple steps to retrieve it.

Create folder of same name with which your dbx file is, e.g. personal.dbx create new folder name it personal.

Shut your out look express.

Copy the dbx file, go to the folder which contains DBX files of your outlook express, since you have created same folder in your new outlook express, you will see named dbx file, just over write the file which you newly created with your old file.

Start your outlook express again and you will be able to see all your email in the folder.

Outlook express WILL compact messages stores after every 100 closings, and WILL continue to prompt until you allow it to do so
Compact the files yourself or allow it to occur

/dbx corruption and loss of all messages WILL happen if you do not compact the database,
that is why a hotfix was issued that forces Outloook express to compact

Have a look at this follow the instructions it should make it all better.

MailNavigator can cope with the task of restoring out-of-order dbx files when Outlook Express itself cannot read them and when a range of other programs are not capable of restoring the information contained in these files. These situations can happen because of viruses, computer breakdown, power interruptions and many other reasons, leading to errors in the file system.
If your computer crashed, first of all you should make sure you have backup copies of your dbx files as well as of all other important data. It's good if you make backup copies of your data on a regular basis. But, unfortunately, in our experience situations are often encountered where there is already nothing to restore.
The process of data recovery from dbx files includes two stages:

If your Outlook Express program is properly installed and tuned, MailNavigator will automatically find the dbx files from the information in the systems register. In this case you can load the dbx files from the Information Retrieval page by double clicking on each of them. Or search for messages in these files using the search system.
If MailNavigator cannot automatically determine the location of the dbx files (for example if these files are on a CD), first you have to find them using search tools, and then load them into MailNavigator using the menu command:
File | Load External Mailbox...
eudora1.gif Once you've read the messages, select the ones that should be exported back into Outlook Express. You can use various filters to select the messages. If you want to export all the messages browsable in the Navigator at once, use the menu command:

Message | Select All
Having selected the messages, export them using the menu command:

Message | Save as...
eudora2.gif In the opened dialogue box, indicate the file and export path, and choose the file type: Eudora mailbox.
When the command is executed, there will be files in the export directory with extensions .toc and .mbx, and also a file descmap.pce. If there are attached files in the exported messages they will be saved in the subdirectory Attach.


Once the mailbox in Eudora format is created, open the program Outlook Express and use the menu command:
File | Import | Messages...

In the opened dialogue box, as the program from which the message is imported, select: Eudora Pro or Light:

In the next dialogue box indicate the directory in which you put the messages from MailNavigator at the export stage:

Further, if Outlook Express finds mailboxes in this directory, it will suggest you select one of them for import:

All that remains to do is to press the Finish button, and a folder containing the imported messages is created in Outlook Express. hope this helps
