Did you download the HDD manufactures software to setup your drive?
Suggest you do so. For a Maxtor or Seagate drive open the link provided; http://www.seagate.com/www/en-us/support/downloads/seatools/
Scroll down the page & download, Download Sea Tools for DOS now!
The above software works within a Dos like window.
http://www.seagate.com/www/en-us/support/downloads/seagate_desktop/
Every HDD manufacture has their own setup software/tools. Go to their site. Download their drive software. Than install windows on your drive. It would be a good idea to register your drive while on the manufactures site. If these does not make a difference & windows restarts. Suggest you double check. Make sure your board is not grounded to your case.

Cheers!
Mike

Had a power failure in my area, my dell desktop was on at time. When I turned it back on I got blue screen which I know is not good. Decided to install new/bigger harddrive since I need to install windows...

Hi, you need to change your primary boot device, try pressing the F1 key during bootup, this will take you to the BIOS screen, from here you can change your primary boot device from HD to CD, save your changes, reboot, selecting boot from CD when it appears during bootup.
Hope this helps

Problem booting into xp home edition on laptop!

Hi Andrew,

Before you install XP check the memory, harddrive, cddrive is getting detected in CMOS or not. What about the data in your harddrive?
connect the harddrive to another PC and copy the Data from the drive. If not you will lose all the data on the harddisk if you install the XP on the same disk.

If you had mentioned the system configuration, i would have told whether you can install XP or Not. Since its a laptop and just 5 years old i guess you can install XP on that.

I have a dell gx 260. orked great for 1 month when

Hello there:
It looks like to me that your bios is not recognizing the harddrive or is not set up properly like user settings or default settings
I would first go into bios and make sure that the bios is set to the harddrive that is installed.
And also in the boot sequense look on this and see if the harddrive is listed there if it is make sure that it is the top one and not the bottom one than save and reboot the computer when it boots back up it should tell show your harddrive and cd rom if connected properly than if all is good now just continue with your xp[ installation or what ever you were doing ok
I hope that this is very helpful for you
best regards righard

Windows xp will not boot

If you just installed windows then take the cd out and let the computer reboot on its own. Windows will ask you to replace the OS disk later.

So just restart the computer with nothing in the CD drive.

Also make sure in BIOS that the Hard drive is the first boot device. Don't need the CD drive as first anymore.

See if that helps.

Computer keeps re-booting while installing any operating system

Were the two power supplies you tried inclusive of the original failed drive or not. In other words did you try a total a 3 power supplies including the one that failed?

If not, please do so. That is, immediately analyze the original known part failure, the power supply or its connection to the board(s) you have tried.

Congratulations for such an exhaustive process of elimination.
