Hafler dh220 power amplifier left channel distorsion
The left channel has no sound until the volume is turned 1/4- to 1/2 up on the dial, and the sound is very distorted, scrathchy and, pops when there is a high bass signal. any suggestions much welcomed. thanks, matt

First, plug it in. Next connect the speakers. Center all eq controls both master and channel. Turn off any reverb or effects. Turn the master volume 1/2 way up. Plug a sound source into channel 1 wiyj the channel volume all the way off. Turn on the amp. Slowly raise the channel volume until you heat output. If you get nothing, it's broken.
1. Turn the main and monitor volumes all the way down (off). Plug a cd player into channel 9/10 and play a track of music of your liking. With the main/monitor volumes still off, adjust the gain on 9/10 until the clip light turns on, then back it down until the clip light just turns off. Put the channel volume at 12 o' clock.
2. With the music still playing, turn up the mains to the desired listening level first, and then adjust the graphic eq until the music sounds good in the room. Remember or mark the position of the volume control. Do not use the channel eq on 9/10 for music that has been mastered properly, leave the eq flat. Once this step is completed then you have now set the main eq.
3. Repeat the same for monitors. Turn off the main volume and then bring up the monitor main volume to the desired level first, then set eq. Now your monitor eq is set properly. Remember or mark the position of the monitor volume.
4. Set up microphone - plug a mic into channel 1 with volume all the way down. Speak or sing into the microphone and adjust the GAIN until you see the clip light, then back down a litttle on the gain. Put the monitor and main volumes back up to the mark from step 2. Now adjust the volume and monitor send on the mic channel to the desired loudness first before adjusting the mic channel eq. Use subtractive eq method to minimize distortion and feedback. ...i.e. if the mic is bassy then turn down the lows, do not ADD highs. If the mic needs bass, turn down the highs.
Sorry for a dump question , have you changed the distorted Right speakers to LEFT to verify if speaker is OK ? First try with just STEREO ,not on Surround and please contact me for further solution possibility.. Take care..
I SUSPECT THE CHANNEL IS BLOWN.YOU COULD TRY OPENING THE UNIT AND SEE IF THERE IS ANY GLASS FUSES.ONE MIGHT BE BLOWN.IF NO FUSES THEN TAKE IT TO A TECHNITION FOR REPAIR.THAT WILL BE YOUR ONLY OTHER OPTION.I KNOW,I HAVE HAD THIS HAPPEN TO ME.GOOD LUCK
Locate the wires running from the head-unit or factory amplifier to the speakers. In some cases you will find these wires behind the head unit, but it may be easier to go directly to the speakers.
Once the speaker wires are found, use the wire strippers to remove 1 inch of insulation from each one. Attach the left channel of the L.O.C. to the left speaker, and the right channel to the right speaker.
Solder the L.O.C. wires to the speaker wires and seal the connection with heat shrink or electrical tape. Secure the L.O.C. to the vehicle. Plug in some RCA cables to the L.O.C. and run them to the amplifier.
Adjust the amplifiers' gain levels to a medium setting. Turn on the stereo and adjust the volume to a comfortable listening level. Use a small screwdriver to adjust the gains on the L.O.C. up until distortion is heard, then turn the gain down until it goes away.
Turn the volume up on the head unit and make sure that there is no distortion present in the amplifier. If distortion is heard, adjust the gain on the amplifier and L.O.C. accordingly.
On your remote control (with tv off) 1. press Display, channel 5, Volume Up and then Power this brings up the service mode (you will see some green text on your screen) 2. Press channel 2 to scroll through options until you see "Micro" in the upper left of your screen (channel 2 cycles up through the options, channel 5 cycles down) 3. Press channel 1 to scroll through suboptions until you see "DIOF" appear under "Micro" (channel 1 cycles up through the suboptions, channel 4 cycles down) 4. Press channel six until the default value (12:60) changes to 12:40 (channel 3 increases the value, channel 6 decreases the value) 5. Once the value has been changed to 12:40, press Muting and you should see red text in the upper right hand corner that says "Write" 6. Simply turn the power off and back on for the change to take effect. Your volume problems should now be fixed.
The new boards multiplex the connectors on the back panel to maximize use. Open the Realtek control panel and configure for sterio 2.1. Also, these new boards do not provide any power drive, so to get decent volume, you will need amplified speakers.
Check to be sure there are no speaker wires touching ground, and that the wires are connected in phase to the head unit.

The symptoms you are relaying definately sound like an internal amplifier problem. It is fading in and out for a reason - usually due to heat.
Have you had the radio bench tested (seperate from the car) to eliminate the car as being the culprit?
Since the radio was run with damaged speakers originally, the output or amplifier power supply on the amplifier may be bad.
As an alternative to repairing, I would suggest investing in a small 2 channel amplifier to power the speakers.
The radios claim 50W per channel, but in reality give 12-15W RMS power.
A dedicated amplifier with built in crossovers and gain adjustments will prolong the life of your speakers and add to the tonal qualities of your new speakers. Instead of turning up the volume on the head Unit, and sending out a distorted signal that will blow your speakers, an amplifier will give more CLEAN power to them, so it will be louder at a lower volume setting.
This will bypass the internal amplifier on the radio, and send a Low Level signal ONLY thru a set of RCA cables.
