Question about Texas Instruments TI-84 Plus Silver Edition Graphic Calculator

1 Answer

My Ti-84 plus silver edition froze

I was doing calculations in class and it froze. I can take the batteries out to turn it off, and it will turn on but that's it. It's stuck on my last calculation and once it's on the buttons won't work. I am a college chemistry major and math minor, so my graphing calculator is necessary... My sister stole my usb-cord this summer for her mp3 player, and she is 2,000 miles away so I'm pretty much screwed. Help?!

About the only other solution I can think of is to take out the backup battery if you haven't already done so. Might work.

TI calculators have an annoying habit of dimming the screen when the batteries are changed so that it appears as if the calculator isn't turning on. Turn the calculator on (or at least press the ON key). Press and release the 2ND key. Press and hold the Up-arrow key for a few seconds and see whether the screen becomes legible.

What do you mean by "changed the resolution"?

My TI-83 PLUS wont turn on

Remove one battery from the calculator and then press and hold down the CLEAR key while re-installing the battery. While continuing to hold down the CLEAR key, press and hold down the ON key. If this doesn't work, then hold DEL and then ON. If unsuccessful, remove all the batteries, including the lithium watch battery, and leave the calculator like that for a while.

This is documented in the TI-83 Plus Guidebook, but unfortunately, not many people know about it.

If that doesn't work, send it to TI for repair. They probably won't even charge you!

TI calculators have an annoying habit of dimming the screen when the batteries are changed so that it appears as if the calculator isn't turning on. Turn the calculator on (or at least press the ON key). Press and hold the diamond key. Press and hold the + key for a few seconds and see whether the screen becomes legible.

If this doesn't do it, please reply to this post and we'll go on from there.

I'm thinking the calculator itself froze (stalled), or the circuit board is taking a long time to process the your command (telling the calculator to turn off). Maybe you should wait a few hours or so and see if it's still on. Did you perhaps take the batteries out while the calculator was still on? You may have damage the circuits inside of the calculator by taking the batteries out while the calculator itself was still on. Maybe if you put some new batteries in the battery compartment and press the "ON" button, it might function properly. This is a suggestion and I hope this works.

I had the same problem nothing worked after raplacing the batteries. The problem with me was dirt/dust in the IO-port, I put the nozzle of the vacuumcleaner on IO-port and turned the cleaner on for a few seconds. After that the calculator worked like a charm.
