The primer is on the return side of the carburetor. It draws fuel from the tank through the carb and returns it to the tank. I think you have an hole in the supply line from the tank to the carb.

when the primer buld is empty, when pushed it should push bubbles into the gas tank and when let go should draw fuel from the tank. the primer buld now when pressed pushes fuel into the carb and should not push back to the tank. when let go again it will draw more fuel from the tank. the inlet nipple on the carb should be the 3 oclock

Fuel line where goes?

one line should run from the gas tank to the carb. if there is a second line and you have a primer bulb on it it goes from the primer back into the gas tank.

Tecumseh engine wtpxs.1851ba. starts and runs 15 seconds then quits. I can keep it running with my thumb over the carb like full choke. I have rebuilt carb but still runs only 15 seconds. What else could...

In the process of the rebuild you must also replace the primer bulb. There is most likely a pin hole in the primer bulb item 35 this link:

Also make sure that the orifice in item 36 is clear. You should be able to see a pin hole of light throught this tube.

With the loat bowl removed you should have enough gas flow to fill a spray paint can lid in 10 - 15 seconds. If you do not have this kind of fuel flow... inspect the gas lines and tank. Also make sure there is no debris in the float needle seat. Item 30 of above link.

Thanks for choosing FixYa,

My weed eater will run with the full choke but want in half choke or run mode.

There may be a filter clogged.Check the gas tank for a filter on the gas line in the tank. Also inside the carb is a very small screen.Inspect the gas line and the primer bulb for small leaks. It may be hard to find but the oly reasons for it to act this way is restricted fuel flo or air getting in the fuel system.

Hi I have a Tanaka hedge trimmer and it has developed the following fault. If I hold the trimmer with the blades pointing upwards the engine runs okay but when I lower the blades to the horizontal...

Does this happen when the gas tank if completely full? If this only happens when the gas tank gets a little emptier than full, I think I know what the problem is. There are two hoses which run from the gas tank to the carb. One of the hoses is attached inside the gas tank to the "bottom" of the tank. The other one is just inside the tank. These two hoses have to create the correct liquid air combination in order to ciphon the gas out of the tank, hence no fuel pump. The primer button starts the ciphon at initial start-up. The problem is either your hoses or your primer button.

Ryobi 790r i have changed the gas line and the primer bulb . the primer will mash in 1 good time and then gets very hard to mash in . i fully choke it and it will crank but only for 3 seconds until it...

You cannot flood the engine by pushing the primer bulb too much, unless the hoses are hooked up backwards. The primer does not push gas to the carb, it sucks gas through the carb and returns it to the tank. Top barb on primer is the hose coming from the return side of the carb and the bottom fitting is the hose going to the return fitting on the tank. Look inside tank, it is the one without the filter on it, just a flange with a hole in the center.

If you can see gas and air bubbles moving through the primer and into the tank the hoses are on correctly. If you see bubbles going in the correct direction and then reversing when you remove your finger from the bulb, then the check valves in the primer may be bad. Replace primer.

When you say the primer "gets hard to mash", do you mean it is hard to push in or is it very slow to refill and return to the home position? If it is hard to push in and the bulb is full of gas and the hoses are on correctly then there must be a plug in the line going to the tank or the vent in the gas cap is not working. If it does not return, then it is most likely a plugged filter, plugged line from the tank to the carb, plugged screen inside the carb or a stuck needle valve. The primer is creating a slight vacuum to pull the gas through the carb, which is what the carb does when the engine is running. If there is a full or partial restiction on the supply circuit neither the primer nor the carb can pull enough gas for the engine to run. May need to disassemble carb and clean out any varnish, gunk or plugged ports/jets. Use spray carb cleaner. May want to think about a diaphagm and gasket kit if you do it yourself. If you do not feel confident in taking apart the carb, then take to a repair shop.
